Motorcycles and scooters
Riding high
Motorcycle and scooter riding is on the rise in Sydney for obvious reasons – they are a fun, practical and low-cost way of getting around town. To keep up with the rising popularity, the City of Sydney has been working on a range of initiatives for residents, workers and visitors who ride.
No more tickets in timed areas
Motorcycle and scooter riders don't need to pay at parking meters in central Sydney, Pyrmont, Redfern, Ultimo, Darlinghurst and Kings Cross. Simply park as you usually would and remember to observe the time restrictions.
Untimed parking spaces in central Sydney
Over recent years, the City has more than trebled the number of untimed motorcycle spaces in central Sydney – especially to the north where the need was greatest. People who ride to work can park in these spaces all day long.
Botanic gardens parking
At the Royal Botanic Gardens there are over 30 clearly marked parking spaces for motorcycles, which are free and not time limited. If you park in a marked metered space you must pay to park and take note of the time limits.
Goulburn Street parking station discount
Riders can park at the Goulburn Street parking station for only $7 a day.
Cheaper permits for residents
On-street parking permits for residents with motorcycles and scooters are half the price of standard car permits.
Better security for motorcycles
Motorbikes and scooters can be vulnerable to theft. The City has begun a trial of anchor points and locking rails for motorcycles in untimed parking areas.
A note on parking ...
Given the very high competition for street space in central Sydney, it is simply impossible to meet all the demand for free, on-street parking. All car, bus and motorcycle parking areas are subject to changes over time to meet demand for bus layovers, bus lanes, cycle paths, loading zones, construction zones, footpath widening or street events. You can see City street parking locations in the street parking map below.
Please do the right thing by pedestrians and your fellow riders by using legal spaces only, and avoiding footpaths or pedestrianised areas. If you only need to stay for a short time, park safely in a metered area. If you can't find a free space on-street, use a parking station.
Private parking stations also offer motorcycle parking.
