Abstract
Design and modeling of integrated off-grid photovoltaic system with co-production,
storage and use of hydrogen
Thesis submitted to the Department of Production and Management Engineering,
School of Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace, Greece, on April 2012
for the degree
Diploma in Production and Management Engineering (Dip. Eng.)
Supervisor: Assist. Prof. T. Karakatsanis

The aim of this thesis is to design a practical and effective tool for studying and
modeling integrated power systems. The specific system produces energy from
photovoltaic, and some part of this energy, we produce hydrogen. The hydrogen can
serve as an alternative source of energy by dissipating electrical current.
The first chapter refers to what is energy, where it comes from and the current
energy situation in Greece.
The second chapter analyzes the photovoltaic technology, the types of photovoltaic
cells and how they operate.
The third chapter describes the hydrogen, its physical and chemical properties, how
we produce it, how we store it and how we use it.
The forth chapter presents the hybrid photovoltaic system with co-production and use
of hydrogen, and the devices making up.
The fifth chapter is the modelling of the system at a home in the area of Thessaloniki.
The sixth chapter is the economical evaluation of the system and presents the scenario
of using hydrogen in a car.
