Editorial Reviews
Review
"Professor Beik's survey of early modern social and cultural history will soon enough be a standard in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses...the real value of this work for students and scholars alike will be experienced in unpacking the entirety of Beik's distinct argument from the many strands of French social and cultural history from which it is derived."
Canadian Journal of History, Dean T. Ferguson, Texas A&M University, Kingsville
"Aimed squarely at advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students, as well as those looking for a thorough and reliable introduction to the past several decades of scholarship, A Social and Cultural History of Early Modern France, provides a thoughtful, well-written, and consistently engaging synthesis of a prodigious amount of scholarship on a vast array of topics." -H-France

This is an excellent multi-layered approach to understanding French society as it evolved ...
Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2015This is an excellent multi-layered approach to understanding French society as it evolved in the centuries leading to the events of the French Revolution. Each chapter opens with a brief introduction on the topic at hand i.e. Rural communities, Peasant life, Domination by the nobility, City Life and city people, etc. and closes with a conclusion. If you are pressed for time, it may due just to read these two parts to get an understanding of Prof. Beik's analysis and final argument. But you will want to read every word or every chapter as Beik brings this world alive with colorful examples of power relationships, events that brought men (and especially women) into the streets, and the minutes descriptions of how French culture and society slowly evolved making the FR almost the logic outcome.

Jacob la Cour5 out of 5 starsThe title does not bring justice to this great history book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 1, 2015The title makes this book sound rather boring. It is NOT! It is a very interesting and well written account of one of the - in my viee - most crucial periods of European history - when the leading nation of (Continental) Europe goes from medieval state to a modern nation. It is superbly researched and littered with colourful, amuzing and bloody annecdotes of the lives of pessants, priests, nobles and Kings.
