    I was lucky enough to have my team grow from 6 to 800 people in 9 years. I was promoted from Senior Manager to Director to Vice President, and I had imposter syndrome the whole time. Here are 4 ways I fought it, and how you can too: It is no surprise that when my team grew 130x from 6 to 800, I ended up not fully knowing what I was doing. At the same time, it is hard to say no to opportunities when you have experienced downsizing and setbacks. So, as the chance to take on new tasks and challenges was available, I said yes. There was definitely an element of "fake it until I make it" in the whole process. It is also true that most of the leaders above and below me were in the same situation. Because of the unprecedented growth of Amazon through these years, most of my managers and direct reports were also in the largest and most complex jobs of their lives. While I cannot know the inner workings of their minds for sure, I feel confident that many of them had similar feelings of imposter syndrome. Action 1: If you worry that you are in over your head, or that people might find out you don't completely know what you are doing, realize that this is normal. Action 2: Understand that it is normal to be in the largest and most complex job of your life for much of your career. If you are not, it often means you have either stepped back intentionally or that you have suffered a setback (like a layoff). Growth inevitably means doing harder things than ever before. Action 3: Get help. Be open with your mentors on what you need. You do not have to share all your worries to lay out your challenges and ask for advice. If you are in an environment where admitting “development areas” is unacceptable, turn your language around and ask for "help optimizing performance and delivery." No one will be against optimization, and it amounts to the same thing - getting insight on any gaps and places to improve. Action 4: Hire a coach, therapist, or counselor if you need one. To be top performers, we need a strong mental game. As leaders, particularly of knowledge work, our whole performance comes from our minds. None of us would hesitate to go to a doctor if we were sick, or a trainer to develop our bodies, so getting help with our mental performance should be a no-brainer. However, there is hesitation and sometimes shame in getting help with our mental game.     I see many people struggling or confused when switching into AI. Don’t jump straight into frameworks like LangChain or LangGraph. Frameworks are accelerators, not starting points. Without foundations, you’ll end up building fragile demos instead of production-grade systems. Here’s a step-by-step path to transition your career into Generative AI: 1. Build Core Foundations --Python (APIs, JSON, virtual envs, packaging) --Git, Docker, Linux basics --Databases: Postgres + pgvector, or FAISS for embeddings 2. Learn Just Enough Math & Data --Vectors, cosine similarity, probability --Tokenization, chunking, normalization 3. Understand LLM Basics --How transformers work at a high level --Different types of models: base vs. instruct, hosted vs. local --Prompt engineering patterns (instruction, few-shot, tool-use) 4. Get Hands-on with RAG (without frameworks first) --Ingest → chunk → embed → store → retrieve → re-rank → generate --Add logging, caching, retries --Evaluate outputs with ground-truth sets 5. Learn Evaluation & Safety --Handle hallucination, PII, toxicity --Define and track metrics (accuracy, latency, cost) 6. Explore Reliability & MLOps --CI/CD for prompts/config --Observability, tracing, cost dashboards --Error handling and fallbacks 7. Then Explore Agents --Start simple: one-tool agents --Add planning and memory only when metrics prove value 8. Finally → Use Frameworks Wisely --Adopt LangChain, LangGraph, or LlamaIndex as orchestration layers --Keep your core logic framework-agnostic 9. Showcase Projects --Document QA system with metrics --Structured extraction pipeline with redaction --A small but reliable agent automating a real workflow 10. Be Interview-Ready --Explain RAG pipelines on a whiteboard --Compare models and providers --Justify design choices (chunking, caching, re-ranking) Learn the primitives first. Frameworks make you faster after you understand what’s under the hood. That’s how you build systems that last.

    My candidate landed her 12 LPA dream job after a 2-year career gap… Most recruiters and job seekers treat career gaps like a red flag. Every week, I see talented professionals sabotaging their comeback because they hide, apologize, or downplay what those years actually taught them. A gap on your resume is not a gap in your value. If you’re still letting your “break” break you, you’re missing out big time. Here’s how my candidate turned her break into a breakthrough: 1. Nailed Her Story in the Interview We practiced a clear, honest narrative for the “career gap” question. Example: “I took time to care for my family and during that time, I built digital workflows and launched a side project that solved a real problem. Those skills are relevant for your team at Deloitte.” She shifted focus from absence to VALUE. 4. Used Smart Networking (not just applications) She reached out to former colleagues working at her dream companies, attended webinars, and asked for informational interviews. Result? Insider referrals and warm intros, no “cold” interviews. 5. Upgraded Her LinkedIn for 2025 Profile before: “Looking for opportunities.” Profile after: “Data Analyst | Delivered digital strategy for non-profits. Passionate about driving impact with numbers.” She also shared a short post about her upskilling journey (which got recruiters DMing her!). 💡 My top pro tips for candidates returning after a gap: ➡ Add a short “Career Break” entry in your resume. ➡ Highlight any freelance project you worked on, or courses you completed during your gap. ➡ Prepare a 60-second, positive story about your break. ➡ Focus on what you bring NOW, not what you “missed.” Your career gap is only a problem if you let it be.     The worst thing you can do after receiving a rejection is to abandon the relationship you’ve built with the recruiter or hiring manager. If you’re tempted to walk away because of a “no,” try looking at it from a different angle. You never know what other opportunities could come your way. When I was rejected from Apple in the semi-final round, I reached back out to the recruiter, highlighted two other roles I was qualified for, and asked if she could introduce me to the respective hiring teams. Because of how I performed throughout the process and the genuine connection I developed with her, she sent two introductory emails on my behalf. Although I ultimately didn’t land those positions, I gained new contacts and received positive feedback on my file. Here’s my three-step process after a rejection: 1. Follow Up 2. Research other roles you qualify for 3. Send your findings to the recruiter/hiring manager and keep the conversation going You never know what might happen: recruiters and hiring managers could move to other companies where you might be a perfect fit. Or you might discover another role that leads to a “yes.” Don’t underestimate the power of maintaining relationships and following up. #StephSynergy

    The Rejection Email That Changed My (and the candidate’s) Career I just helped a candidate secure a job offer after he'd been rejected by the same company just three months earlier. How? The candidate did something most job seekers never consider. When he received the initial rejection, instead of quietly moving on, he sent a thoughtful response thanking the hiring manager for the opportunity and asking for one specific piece of feedback. That email sparked a conversation which eventually led to him being considered for a different role. This story highlights something I've observed repeatedly in my years as a headhunter: your response to rejection can be as important as your application. Here's what successful candidates do differently: 1. They view rejections as pauses, not stops. The hiring world is fluid—budgets change, requirements shift, and new positions open up. Maintaining positive connections keeps you in the loop. 2. They ask for targeted feedback. Don't request general improvement areas. Ask: "Could you share one skill I could develop that would make me a stronger candidate for similar roles?" This is specific and actionable. 3. They show growth between applications. If you reapply, highlight what you've learned or improved since your last application. This demonstrates commitment and adaptability. 4. They stay visible professionally. Comment thoughtfully on the hiring manager's LinkedIn posts or share relevant industry articles. This keeps you on their radar without being pushy. 5. They treat recruiters as long-term connections. A good recruiter remembers candidates who communicate professionally, even when things don't work out. We often come back to people who left positive impressions.     A rejection letter hits your inbox. Most people avoid reading it, take it personally, and never respond. But that's leaving opportunity on the table. Here's what the best job seekers do instead: Reply with gratitude (easier said than done). - Thank the recruiter and hiring team. - Keep the door open for future roles. Request feedback (if possible). - Not every company can share details. - But a small note can help you refine your approach. Explore other roles. - Check if they're hiring for similar positions. - Be extremely specific about why you're interested. Reflect and refine. - What went well? What needs improvement? - Talk with someone already in the role you want. Because here's the truth: The worst thing you can do is walk away without learning anything. Admit it, this didn't go the way you wanted it to go and now it's time to pivot or press forward. A rejection isn't the end - it's data. It's an insight into what companies are looking for. It's a chance to build relationships for the future. The people who get hired? They treat every interaction like it matters.     "Can you explain this gap in your resume?" Career gaps are NOT a character flaw. In fact, quite the opposite. A career gap can indicate someone who is: ✅ Clear on their priorities ✅ Confident enough to make tough choices ✅ Mature and responsible When my youngest was 3, he had severe asthma (Level 4) which meant that he was hospitalized nearly weekly. My life was a series of doctor's appointments, caring for my older child, and working a full-time job that required travel. I was beyond fortunate that my direct supervisor and my employer told me to do whatever was needed to care for him. Without that grace, I surely would have had to quit my job and it would have been the right decision. As a result, I learned how to: ↳ Set boundaries and manage my time better ↳ Work strategically and efficiently ↳ Delegate and train others But not everyone has that luxury. I recently worked with a client who left a job to care for her aging mother. I discovered that when she got a question about the gap, she was trying to hide it. She's not alone. Most people make these critical mistakes when addressing resume gaps: ❌ Apologizing excessively ❌ Providing too many personal details ❌ Sounding defensive or unprepared ❌ Focusing on the gap instead of their value ❌ Making up elaborate explanations Here's how successful candidates handle gaps with confidence: 1️⃣ Own your story without apology ↳ Be matter-of-fact about what happened 💡Why? Confidence signals that you view your path as valid and valuable. 2️⃣ Focus on growth during the gap ↳ Highlight skills developed, relevant volunteer work, courses, or projects 💡Why? Employers see that you're proactive and committed to growth. 3️⃣ Redirect to your strengths ↳ Quickly pivot to why you're perfect for this role 💡Why? The interview is about your fit, not your past. 4️⃣ Prepare a concise explanation ↳ Practice a response that feels natural with only relevant details 💡Why? Being prepared eliminates anxiety and helps you respond thoughtfully. 5️⃣ Address it proactively when appropriate ↳ Bringing it up first allows you to own the story Gaps happen because of parenting decisions, health issues, caregiving responsibilities, layoffs, career pivots, and countless other valid reasons.     Let’s talk about limiting beliefs. As a coach to ambitious founders, I focus on strategy, leadership, decision-making and execution. But even when a client has raised millions, leads a team, or is building something loved by thousands, limiting beliefs still show up. They appear quietly, unconsciously: - “I’m terrible with numbers.” - “No one wants to hear from me on camera.” - “I’m not ready to charge that much.” - “My co-founder handles sales, I’m not good at it.” These beliefs become the first (and loudest) 'no' in the room, often leading to dangerous indecision. Here's the three-step approach that changes everything: Get Curious You'll feel a limiting belief before you hear it. It's the 'stuckness' that stops you from hitting send on that important email. When you notice it, pause and ask: 'When did I first learn this about myself?' Often it traces back to a specific moment: a teacher's comment, a failed presentation, or even something a parent said about money. Name the origin story. Show Empathy Don't try to rationalize it away ('I'm not 8 years old anymore'). Instead, acknowledge its purpose. For example, if you believe 'I'm not ready to charge that much,' that voice might be protecting you from the same rejection you felt as a child when asking for something and being told no. Thank that protective instinct, it served you once. Integrate This isn't about banishing the belief. Instead, actively call on your other internal voices: 'What would my most confident self say about this price?' 'What would my mentor advise?' 'What does my track record actually show?' Give each voice airtime, then consciously choose which perspective will guide your next action. The goal isn't to silence limiting beliefs, it's to stop letting them lead. Next time you feel that familiar stuckness, try this approach. Limiting beliefs evolve. But when you stop letting them lead, so do you. ✨

    What’s really holding you back? Spoiler alert: It’s not your skills. How many times have you felt like you’re not up for the job? That you’re not qualified? Or that someone else could do it better? Here’s the reality: ➡️ 13% of employees and 20% of senior managers admit they frequently feel like a fraud. ➡️ 54% of women report experiencing imposter syndrome, compared to 38% of men. I get it, because I’ve been there. I used to struggle with being visible - giving speeches, creating content online, even doing TV interviews. Despite decades of experience, there was always a little voice in my head whispering: “Do people really want to hear from you? What if they laugh at you?” Here’s the truth: It’s not based on facts - it’s just the noise in our heads. Here’s how you can overcome imposter syndrome and show up like you deserve to: 1/ The Imposter Loop ↳ You doubt every win and question every achievement. ↳ Own your story: You earned your seat at the table. ↳ Write down three wins you’re proud of. Seeing them silences the noise. 2/ The Permission Trap ↳ You wait to feel ready or for someone to say “go.” ↳ Stop waiting: Start before you’re ready. ↳ Set a deadline and commit publicly - action builds momentum faster than waiting for confidence to strike. 3/ The Comparison Game ↳ You stalk others’ success and compare your chapter 1 to their chapter 20. ↳ Run your own race: Their doubts, fears, and failures aren’t in the highlight reel. ↳ Unfollow or mute accounts that trigger self-doubt. Focus on progress, not perfection. 4/ The Perfectionism Loop ↳ You polish endless drafts, overthink every detail, and never feel “good enough.” ↳ Launch at 80%: Fix it in flight. Done is better than perfect. ↳ Set a timer for your next task and stop when it’s ‘good enough.’ Progress beats perfection every time. 5/ The Silence Spiral ↳ You keep your struggles hidden and pretend you’ve got it all figured out. ↳ Share your story: You’ll be surprised how many people say “me too.” ↳ Find a peer or mentor and share one struggle you’re facing. Vulnerability builds connection. 6/ The Safety Net ↳ You stay in your comfort zone and call it “being realistic.” ↳ Take the leap: Growth lives outside your comfort zone. ↳ Identify one “safe” habit you’re clinging to. Replace it with one bold action, no matter how small. 7/ The Knowledge Shield ↳ You hide behind preparation, waiting to know “just one more thing.” ↳ Start doing: Expertise comes from action. ↳ Turn learning into doing: Commit to acting on one idea from the last book, course, or workshop you completed. What would be possible if you silenced those doubts once and for all?
