The history of Formula One Grand Prix racing consists of much more than the
World Championship. There were a plethora of non-championship races during
the 1950's and 1960's, as well as national Formula One championships such
as the British Aurora series. This page attempts to chronical the entire
grand prix scene, but we have to start somewhere, and we will start with the
World Championship itself.
N.B. - Between 1952 and 1953 the world championship was run under F2 rules,
and from 1950-1960 points scored at the Indianapolis 500 counted towards the
world championship.
Non-Championship F1 Races
In parallel with the early World Championship Formula 1 series, there were
many non-championship races held in many countries. Towards the end of the
1960s these races started to die out, although the Race of Champions lasted
until 1983.
What follows is the most complete results for each year that I have. They
are not comprehensive, and I hope to add further to them as time progresses.
After the British F5000 and the Shellsport International F.Libre series
became defunct, the Aurora F1 series was started in 1978, catering for
F1 cars, but also incorporating F2 cars to make up the numbers.
