Who is eligible?
Accreditation Canada surveyors conduct surveys in over 40 countries, including all 13 provinces and territories in Canada. Surveyors are people with experience working in health and social service organizations, and people who have lived experience in health and social services.
If you meet the following criteria, we are looking for you!
- Senior-level health and social service professionals employed full or part time in a health or social services organization, with preference given to candidates who have knowledge and experience with Accreditation Canada processes
OR:
Patients or caregivers with extensive, first-hand knowledge of the current health or social service system, with preference given to candidates who have knowledge and experience with Accreditation Canada processes - Experience working or partnering with others (e.g. patients, clinicians, administrators) on service design or quality improvement initiatives
- Strong communication and analytical skills
- Good understanding of the local or regional health care system
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to adapt to unexpected changes
- Strong technology skills, including the ability to operate a computer and use web-based software
Please note: Canadian-based surveyors are only deployed on international surveys once they become experienced surveyors in Canada.
Selection Process
Surveyor candidates are selected based on:
- Eligibility requirements
- Surveyor competencies
- Recruitment needs
Selected candidates will have a virtual interview with a surveyor mentor.
Commitment
Onboarding and Training
During onboarding, successful surveyor candidates are required to sign off on Accreditation Canada policies and procedures, and sign a surveyor agreement.
Surveyor candidates receive new surveyor training to become certified surveyors. The program includes:
- Self-directed, online training (15-20 hours), including an assignment and final exam
- Virtual or in-person classroom session (8 hours)
- Internship survey (3-5 days)
Surveyors maintain their certification in the Surveyor Certification Program, which consists of:
- Annual mandatory training
- Re-certification exams at regular intervals
- Other ongoing educational activities
Surveyors who are not working in an accredited Accreditation Canada organization or a partner organization must participate in the Maintenance of Currency program requirements.
Surveys
Surveyors are required to give the following annual time commitments:
- Minimum of 10 days or surveys per year
- First year – 1 internship survey (3-5 days) and 1 survey (3-5 days)
- Second year onwards – 2 or more surveys a year
- Preparation and travel time as required

Compensation
Surveyors are paid a modest honorarium for their surveying days and are reimbursed for travel expenses. In Canada, surveyors can also earn continuing education credits from the First Nations Health Managers Association (FNHMA), Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL), Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), and the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
