Did you know?
1/6Composition History
Bach's solo violin works, along with his cello suites and Book 1 of The Well-Tempered Clavier, are relatively early compositions, dating from his time serving Leopold, Prince of Anhalt-Köthen.
Composer Biography
Johann Sebastian Bach, a passionate and sometimes quarrelsome man, possessed exceptional gifts including an innate sense of pitch and rhythm, an instinct for melody, and a natural mathematical bent.
Composer's Artistic Vision
The Chaconne from the D minor Partita is believed by German Bach expert Helga Thoene to be a memorial for Bach's first wife, Maria Barbara Bach, containing subtle references to chorales connected with death.
Compositional Technique
The D minor Partita concludes with the Chaconne, a monumental set of variations on a ground bass, which is considered Bach's greatest single span of music.
Composer Biography
Bach titled his violin collection 'Sei solo' (You are alone) as a sad Italian pun after returning from Carlsbad to discover his wife, Maria Barbara, had died and been buried.
Composition History
The Sonatas for solo violin were likely completed by 1718 and the Partitas by 1720, during Bach's service with Leopold, Prince of Anhalt-Köthen.
