“We connected the LLM to our documents. So it should work.” Technically? Yes. In reality? Not always. Many enterprise AI assistants rely on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG = the process of optimizing the output of a large language model) and asking an LLM to generate answers. It works in demos, but in real environments context gets lost and relationships disappear. The results are hallucinations. incomplete answers, loss of trust. The energy at #FabCon #SQLCon 2026 is something else. You can feel it in the room. It kicks off with Satya Nadella setting the tone, and from that moment on, one thing becomes crystal clear: 👉 Microsoft is all in on the Data & AI platform battle. The level of investment, the pace of innovation, and the sheer volume of announcements is… intense. Dozens of new features. Several major shifts. And most importantly, a very clear direction. What stood out to me the most? Ontologies + Fabric IQ. We’re moving beyond just data platforms and semantic layers into something much closer to how businesses actually understand and operate their world. Ontologies bring structure to meaning. Fabric IQ connects that meaning to action. 👉 If this lands the way Microsoft intends, it’s not just another feature. It’s a fundamental shift towards operational intelligence powered by data. My take? 💡 Microsoft may have hit the jackpot here. But the market probably hasn’t caught up yet. Of course, there’s still a journey ahead to make this fully robust and enterprise-ready. But directionally, this is one of the most important moves I’ve seen in a while.
