BC is considering changes to several natural resource permitting processes. One of the changes being considered is exemptions for construction dewatering. The province is seeking input on how to determine risk level thresholds. High risk construction dewatering would likely still require approval, but lower risk dewatering might proceed without requiring an authorization. The Fraser Basin Council is pleased to announce new resources to guide practitioners and communities undertaking extreme heat projects: The Extreme Heat Mapping Project Guidance Framework was designed for diverse audiences such as Indigenous communities, local authorities, public sector organizations and practitioners. It serves as a step-by-step roadmap for how to prepare, develop, and analyze an extreme heat mapping project. The accompanying Case Study Report aims to increase understanding and implementation of best practices in extreme heat mapping, and to bridge the gap between B.C.’s increasing need for heat mapping and the abundance of experience available internationally. Successful case studies engaged their residents in collecting local temperature readings to support the data-updating process. Each case study includes a comprehensive overview of the project, methodologies, utility, challenges, and lessons learned. They can be used to 🔹develop emergency response plans that protect residents from heat-related illnesses and fatalities, 🔹inform urban planning to identify cooling features in structures and recreational spaces, 🔹organize stewardship initiatives that safeguard cultural heritage, food sovereignty, and ecosystems, and 🔹identify adaptive practices and resource allocation for the agricultural sector. Communities can leverage extreme heat mapping as a powerful tool for mitigating disaster risk, enhancing resilience, and protecting community well-being in a changing climate. Extreme heat maps can instigate conversations with residents and community organizations about extreme heat and the inequitable distribution of its impacts.

This is Reconciliation in action. At OPG’s Darlington New Nuclear Project site, Indigenous-owned Cambium Indigenous Professional Services (CIPS) is combining Traditional ecological ways of knowing with Western science to protect and nurture biodiversity for future generations 🌍. Through a Two-Eyed Seeing mindset, CIPS has worked at the site to plant trees and shrubs🌳 and create new habitats for several species at risk, including birds such as bank swallows and bats 🦇 such as the little brown myotis. “We are looking to restore these habitats so these species can create homes and have food sources to sustain their normal life functions in this area,” said Corey Kinsella, a Project Lead at CIPS. “It’s our goal that in 10 years we can have a nice flourishing space for all of the birds, bats, and bees.” Learn more: https://bit.ly/4mzh9iA

A great example of the importance of an up-to-date SDS management system. In addition to ensuring the safety of workers who use the chemicals as well as proper storage , there is increased efficiency (not managing and/or storing materials no longer in use) and regulatory compliance. The key now is to ensure users maintain the gains.

Feedback from Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Companies (EPCs) highlights a crucial concern: the initial outreach to local First Nations communities can present significant hurdles. Projects that proceed without obtaining prior consent and conducting cultural heritage surveys may face increased risks and delays. Therefore, prioritizing early engagement for Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) and collaborative process design is essential. It is paramount to involve First Nations in all project phases, including post-commissioning environmental management planning. This inclusive strategy not only fosters ongoing cooperation but also creates job prospects. The presence of a knowledgeable Conservation Officer versed in land, fire hazards, fauna, and flora enhances project sustainability and community participation, drawing on a deep well of knowledge accumulated over 65,000 years of land intelligence. Portal to the hollow Earth? Nope - just a drilled well inside a 100+ year old dug well. Needs abandonment? Yes, but how? When most people hear “Wells Regulation,” they think of drinking-water wells. But Ontario’s R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 903 (Wells Regulation) applies much more broadly - including tagged wells that our industry installs on construction, investigation and remediation projects. If these wells are no longer needed, by law, they must be properly abandoned (plugged and sealed) to prevent them from becoming contamination conduits. Is Reg. 903 still current? Yes. As of today, Reg. 903 remains the governing regulation under the Ontario Water Resources Act for construction, maintenance and decommissioning of wells (including test holes, monitoring and dewatering wells). Ontario’s own technical bulletins and best-practice manuals from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) continue to reference Reg. 903 for when and how to abandon wells. Hatfield is excited to attend the CWRA National Conference, showcasing two presentations at this year’s event! Hosted by the Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA) in Penticton, BC, the event takes place on the traditional territories of the Okanagan (Syilx) People. It brings together diverse stakeholders to collaborate on sustainable water management. The theme, "Living Between Waters - Connecting Water & Resilience," emphasizes cross-sector partnerships, Indigenous rights, and the role of governments, municipalities, and industry in building resilience. We are proud to be presenting on two different occasions at this event: Hatfield’s Jacob N. and Jos Beckers, PhD, PGeo will be presenting on “Forecasting Seasonal Groundwater Levels in Rain and Snow Dominated Recharge Settings”. In partnership with the BC River Forecast Centre and PGOWN, an ANN-based model for real-time groundwater forecasting up to 90 days was developed, to support proactive drought management across British Columbia. This presentation will be in the “BC Water Governance: Water Scarcity to Water Abundance” session on Tuesday May 27, 3:30 - 5:00 PM, in Salon C. Hatfield’s Emily Pugh and Lauren Thompson will present on “Hydrological Resiliency of Reclamation Landscapes to Future Climate Scenarios in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region.” Their presentation outlines conceptual models for reclaimed landscapes and compares their hydrologic resilience to climate change, offering insights for sustainable oil sands reclamation.
