Wouter Durville ha publicado estoWhat has everyone on your hiring team just... assumed? I was at Web Summit last year, and got talking to another founder on the way there. They'd just made a hire after months of searching for a Head of Marketing. Thirty-plus candidates. A proper process. And they finally pulled the trigger. It didn't work out. They were building an AI-first company. The person they hired didn't use AI in their own work, let alone lead a whole team through it. Nobody had checked. They'd just assumed that anyone who made it that far would have the basics covered. The hire that costs you won't be the one you agonised over. It'll be the one you assumed. Thirty candidates, a whole summer of searching, and the shortlist had a hole in it that nobody thought to look for. Because the question never came up. So think about your current shortlist. What is everyone just taking for granted? A skill that the last person in the role happened to have. A requirement that felt so obvious it never made it onto the scorecard. That's where the next bad hire is hiding. If something feels off, or you want a second pair of eyes on what you're actually testing for, drop me a message.

Wouter Durville ha compartido estoMost companies say they hire for skills. Almost none of them do. They hire for experience. Which made sense when the job stayed the same for five years. It doesn’t anymore. The World Economic Forum estimates 59% of the global workforce will need reskilling by 2030. That’s not a future problem. That’s the people you’re hiring right now, into roles that will look completely different before the end of their first contract. So when your process starts with a CV - filtering for familiar job titles, recognisable company names, career paths that look like the last person who did the job, you are screening for the past. Here’s the part that should sting: the candidates you’re filtering out for not having the “right experience” are often exactly the people who could develop the skills you actually need. You're rejecting future capability because it doesn't have a familiar label yet. We built TestGorilla's test library around exactly this problem. - A Problem Solving test tells you how someone thinks under pressure. - A Critical Thinking test tells you how they evaluate information when the answer isn't obvious. - The Rapid Cognitive Index measures how quickly someone can learn, not what they already know. - And a Working With Generative AI test tells you whether they can operate in the environment your team is already moving into. None of that shows up on a CV. All of it matters more than years in a role. The question isn't 'can this person do the job today?' It's 'can this person do the job this role becomes in 18 months?' If you don't know how your process answers the second question, that's worth figuring out before your next hire.
-
Wouter Durville ha compartido estoA customer called us recently. "The test must be wrong," they said. "Our best person didn't do well." They weren't wrong to question it. But what they were really telling us was something more interesting. Their best person is excellent at the job. Genuinely! But take them out of the environment they've built, the workflows, the shortcuts, the accumulated context, and the underlying skill looks different. Not because they're not good. Because what makes them good is partly the system, not just them. There are two different things your hiring process can measure: Contextual performance: How well someone performs inside a known system. This is what most of your top performers have. It's real, it's valuable, and it took time to build. Transferable capability: How well someone performs when the system is removed. Harder to spot on a CV, harder to build a process around. But it's what tells you who can grow, adapt, and perform in a role that looks different in two years. Most processes are set up to find one or the other. The stronger approach is knowing which you're measuring at any given point, and hiring deliberately for both. Your best person didn't fail the test. The test just measured something different to what made them successful. The question is whether your hiring process knows the difference. And whether it's set up to find both.

Wouter Durville ha compartido estoMost hiring processes aren’t built to find the right person. They’re built to make you feel like you did. Every extra round of interviews, every “let’s just get one more opinion”. This is doubt dressed up as process, not rigour. I see this constantly. Teams are spending weeks evaluating candidates they could have screened out on day one. Strong candidates are dropping out because the process drags. And the decision that could have been made in round two finally happening round five. The questions nobody asks: at what point did you actually know? Not feel good about. Know. The best teams I’ve seen don’t add more steps to reduce risk. They design the FIRST STEP to create real signal. If you mapped out your last hire and identified what the signal was, I'd bet most of what came after it wouldn't survive the scrutiny.

TestGorilla's AI fluency framework gives hiring teams a practical, science-backed way to define and measure the AI skills that actually matter 📊 Beyond my session, the day was packed with great content: ⚡ AI inference at scale - reliably serving millions of users is a serious engineering challenge. GPU scarcity, memory constraints, model optimization, scalability, cost control - Ivan de Prado Alonso shared some great lessons learned. 🔐 The OWASP Top 10 for GenAI - prompt injection, insecure output handling, data poisoning... Fabio Cerullo gave a detailed look at the new attack vectors emerging with AI and how to mitigate them. If you're shipping AI products, this framework needs to be on your radar. And in between it all, I got to explore a beautiful city 😍 Valencia's old town, the stunning Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, and some truly exceptional paella! You skim 50 before lunch, shortlist eight you feel okay about, and spend the next week on screening calls. A new €40 million public fund is turning Catalonia, Spain into a launchpad for Europe’s space industry. As part of the job of building up the region’s space industry, Catalonia’s government has launched a public fund with an initial investment of €40 million. The plan is to use that investment to help companies, attract talent, build alliances and raise Catalonia’s profile in space technologies. This is all under the umbrella of the region’s “Catalonia Space Strategy 2030” which maps out how they want to grow over the next five years. They expect the €40 million to be just the beginning. In fact they aim to mobilise around €150 million in public funds and then double that via private capital. In other words, every public euro invested should end up attracting another euro of private investment. One of the practical targets: the strategy includes the launch of eight satellite missions by 2030. These missions will focus on Earth-observation (for things like floods, droughts, emergencies) and communications (including remote areas). Source: Catalonia Trade & Investment

Better Policymaking in the Age of AI | Prepared by IE University Center for the Governance of Change (CGC) This report examines how artificial intelligence is reshaping the democratic policy cycle—agenda-setting, formulation, implementation, and evaluation—highlighting both structural opportunities and systemic risks. Drawing on empirical evidence and experimental studies, it argues that AI can enhance participatory governance, improve administrative efficiency, and strengthen evidence-based decision-making. However, without robust institutional safeguards, it may also amplify exclusion, opacity, and accountability gaps. Key findings underscore a significant governance readiness deficit: only 18% of public sector employees report receiving adequate AI training (EY, 2025). Experimental evidence from the “Habermas Machine” (Tessler et al., 2024) demonstrates that AI-assisted deliberation can outperform human mediators in generating shared ground in polarized debates, suggesting transformative potential for consensus-building. Conversely, the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure carries sustainability implications; in Ireland and the Netherlands, data centers account for over 15% of peak national electricity consumption (Kamiya & Bertoldi, 2024), exposing environmental trade-offs embedded in digital transformation. Risk exposure varies across policy stages. In agenda-setting, algorithmic amplification may distort citizen representation and enable manipulation. During formulation, hallucinations, embedded bias, and black-box opacity threaten institutional legitimacy. In implementation, automation bias and digital divides may deepen inequities. In evaluation, excessive reliance on algorithmic outputs risks eroding critical oversight and contextual judgment. In conclusion, the report proposes three strategic pathways: (1) institutionalizing AI literacy across technical, ethical, and legal domains; (2) embedding accountability through pre-deployment rights audits and cross-functional procurement governance; and (3) investing in open, sovereign, and sustainable AI infrastructures, including open-licensed public models and energy-efficient computing systems. In conclusion, whether AI strengthens democratic welfare or entrenches systemic vulnerabilities will depend on present-day governance architecture, regulatory foresight, and investment discipline. #AIforGovernance #DigitalDemocracy #ResponsibleAI #PublicSectorInnovation #TechPolicy

🏠 Socioeconomic Challenges in Catalonia: Housing, Aging, and AI in the Labor Market In a recent analysis, Catalonia faces structural challenges that define its future. Poverty becomes chronic, affecting 20% of the population, exacerbated by growing inequalities and the lack of comprehensive policies. 🔒 Access to Housing: Skyrocketing prices and a scarcity of public supply complicate stability for families and young people, with rents absorbing up to 40% of average incomes. 👴 Population Aging: With more than 20% of inhabitants over 65 years old, the pension and healthcare systems are strained, demanding innovations in geriatric services and adapted urban planning. 🤖 Impact of AI on Employment: Automation threatens sectors like manufacturing and services, but it also opens opportunities in tech and reskilling; urgent digital training is needed to mitigate mass layoffs. These interconnected challenges require urgent actions in public policies and public-private collaboration to foster inclusion and sustainability. Seeing two startups from our G-accelerator programme at 4YFN Barcelona last week was a proud moment. NABLA and DIGIPAL took the stage to present their ideas at one of the world’s biggest startup events, representing GBSB Global contribution to the entrepreneurship ecosystem. Both are tackling interesting problems: → NABLA is building a learning tool that creates and checks handwritten study materials, even without internet access. → DIGIPAL is reducing paper waste by replacing paper receipts with a digital system using NFC and blockchain. Moments like this are exactly why we created our startup programme, and seeing early ideas grow and reach global platforms like 4YFN is always special. Always great to see projects like these taking their next step and being able to reconnect with our past edition participants during the event! https://lnkd.in/eA9ygwBy

Article 3: The Importance of Good English for Coaching and Performance Development Coaching in the workplace focuses on improving performance, building skills, and unlocking potential. Effective coaching depends on clear communication, goal alignment, and continuous feedback—areas where good English plays a decisive role. Without strong language skills, even well-intentioned coaching efforts may fail to deliver results. Coaches must explain expectations, processes, and improvement areas clearly. Good English ensures that feedback is specific, actionable, and easy to understand. Ambiguous or poorly structured language can confuse employees, leading to inconsistent performance and frustration. Performance coaching often involves analyzing behavior, discussing outcomes, and setting future goals. These conversations require precision and professionalism. English proficiency enables coaches to frame discussions constructively, focusing on growth rather than criticism. This approach helps maintain employee morale while driving improvement. Listening is another critical component of coaching. Strong English comprehension allows coaches to accurately understand employee concerns, challenges, and motivations. Misunderstandings due to language gaps can weaken trust and reduce coaching effectiveness. In leadership coaching, English becomes even more important. Leaders are expected to communicate vision, influence teams, and manage change. Coaches supporting leadership development must use clear and persuasive language to guide leaders through complex organizational scenarios. Additionally, coaching documentation—such as development plans, feedback summaries, and performance reports—requires strong written English. These documents often become part of official records and influence promotion decisions. Poor language quality can undermine the seriousness of the coaching process. Ultimately, good English enhances the quality of coaching interactions and outcomes. It enables clarity, trust, and alignment, making coaching a powerful tool for professional growth and organizational success. https://lnkd.in/ghEUEGr3

Esteban Zecler and Julian Bender were already exited founders when they met @ our fellowship. Their next big thing came from a problem both of them faced: Hiring faster, hiring better, and not losing your mind in the process. ;) HR teams waste 90% of their time on manual work. Selenios is flipping their script with AI agents that source, contact, and even interview candidates. The result? Hiring cycles shrank from 45-90 days down to 4-5 days, slashing 50-60% of the busywork. Selenios now works with 35+ clients across 5 countries. It also just closed a $1.2M pre-seed led by NAZCA, with yours truly Latitud, Alina VC, Fen Ventures, and FJ Labs in the mix. We’re backing Esteban, Julián, and co-founder Jonathan Muszkat early, and excited about Selenios’ mission to transform how hiring is done across regions. Day 1! 🚀

“Rejected… by a robot.” Sounds absurd, right? But that’s exactly what happens when your CV meets an ATS (Applicant Tracking System). Before a human even sees your application, a machine decides if you’re worth shortlisting. And here’s the bitter truth: A stunning design can confuse the system. The wrong format can get you auto-rejected. Missing keywords? Straight to the digital trash. So while you’re waiting for a call back, your CV might already be ghosted-by software. Here’s the good news: an ATS-friendly CV doesn’t just get past the robot, it also speaks directly to the recruiter. That’s the balance most jobseekers miss. 👉 Have you ever wondered if your CV is ATS-proof? Or worse-been rejected before the interview stage without knowing why? Let’s talk. I’d love to share insights and help you make your CV work smarter, not harder. #ResumeWriting #ProfessionalCV #AadauSolutions #ATS

A few data points on startup investment and the maturity of the ecosystem. Startups that have reached the final stage of the South Summit Startup Competition have raised more than €20.5 billion in investment, with a survival rate above 85%. This is not just about volume, but about sustained performance over time. One particularly relevant aspect is that the capital raised is not concentrated only in early stages, but also includes larger rounds at later stages, reflecting real processes of business maturity and scalability. In addition, Spanish startups alone account for more than €11.6 billion in investment, confirming the ability of the national ecosystem to attract capital and consolidate in competitive markets. Our Startup Competition has become a relevant early identification space for startups with real growth potential, especially in a context where investment is increasingly selective and focused on solid, scalable projects. Let's keep building 🚀 https://lnkd.in/etTRYwkQ #SouthSummit #Investment #VentureCapital #Startups #Scaleups #Ecosystem #Growth

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF CULTURAL SENSITIVITY... Workshop for Conector Startup Accelerator in Barcelona the other day, and something interesting came up while we were working on elevator pitches: cultural sensitivity. It’s something founders don’t always think about when pitching internationally. The same sentence can land very differently depending on who is in the room. For example, in some American investor circles, saying “we’re building a billion-dollar company” is taken as confidence and ambition. In many European rooms, the immediate reaction is more likely to be: “What evidence do you have to support that?” Same pitch, but completely different interpretation. Pitching internationally is not just about doing the pitch in English. It’s about understanding the mindset of the people you’re speaking to. The founders who navigate this well usually do one simple thing: they RESEARCH the room before they walk in. #StartupFounders #StartupEcosystem #ElevatorPitch #StartupPitch #Fundraising #VentureCapital #LeadershipCommunication #Entrepreneurship

Job&Talent

A recent piece by El Confidencial highlights Spain's position among the top countries in Europe for job-leaving intent—with nearly 40% of workers actively looking to change jobs. Our Country Manager Iberia, Ramon Vidal de Arriba, shared his perspective on what today’s workforce is really looking for—and why companies must adapt quickly to keep up. The reality is clear: workers are prioritizing flexibility, personal growth, and purpose more than ever. #AmTech founders are building the future. Over the last 20 years, the US government has partnered with entrepreneurs to generate $1.6 trillion in enterprise value, more than the annual GDP of Spain. The next 20 years can be even bigger as founders tackle the grand challenges facing America, from energy to health to security. Our analysis shows that a full 24% of unicorns benefitted from government investment. Check out the full white paper + coverage from PitchBook in the comments! Building in these markets? 👥Human Information Fields are not formed just anywhere. Not every country creates the right conditions to develop knowledge nodes or transmission nodes. For someone to become a true node —a generator, processor, and transmitter of valuable knowledge— they must grow in a synchronized human field. 🌍 Unfortunately, many emerging countries invest billions in basic, generalized education systems that do not lead to the creation of exceptional human constellations —groups of individuals operating in collective synchronization to generate high-impact results. 💡 Instead of trying to replicate industrialized nations’ outdated education models, emerging countries should focus on developing niches of synchronized excellence, where knowledge is not just taught, but encoded, refined, and transmitted across generations. 🌱 The truth is that most high-potential knowledge nodes end up emigrating —seeking fertile ground elsewhere to scale their impact. 🧠 In the image, we show the academic paths of many “Midas Investors.” Though not unique, a clear pattern emerges. It is replicable —and in the right environment, it becomes more probable. What does that tell us? That human constellations can be designed. ✨ It’s not about producing more graduates. It’s about creating synchronized knowledge hubs, where collective intelligence can truly take root. 📌 Are we still investing in 20th-century education models? 🔁 Or are we designing ecosystems for human nodes to thrive? #HumanInformationFields #KnowledgeNodes #MidasPattern #EmergingNations #EducationReform #CollectiveIntelligence #HumanConstellations #LegacyPreservation #AIandHumanity #ExponentialTalent

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐮𝐛? Catalonia is no longer “emerging.” It is consolidated. 🔹 203 international tech hubs are currently active in Catalonia 🔹 €4.109 billion in annual economic impact 🔹 46,080 professionals working in tech hubs (+10% vs 2024) 🔹 12 new hubs landed in 2025 alone 🔹 The United States is the #1 country of origin But the real story goes beyond the numbers. Catalonia competes directly with Berlin, London, Amsterdam — and increasingly with San Francisco and Bangalore — for high-value innovation projects. Why companies choose Catalonia? ✔ Reputation and global positioning (98%) ✔ Existing corporate footprint (96%) ✔ Strong tech infrastructure & connectivity (91%) ✔ Government incentives (91%) ✔ Competitive office costs vs. major EU capitals ✔ Deep talent pool in AI, Data, Cloud & Cybersecurity Catalonia is not only a back office destination. It is a strategic innovation node for global companies. If your company is exploring a European tech hub, R&D center or innovation unit, let’s talk. As the Catalonia Trade&Investment Office in Miami, we support U.S. companies throughout the entire landing process — from strategic analysis to incentives, talent mapping and ecosystem integration. hashtag #FDI hashtag #TechHubs hashtag #Innovation hashtag #USCompanies hashtag #AI hashtag #Barcelona hashtag #Catalonia hashtag #InvestInCatalonia

Josour is starting to take shape. We are sharing the first list of schools participating in the Josour initiative, all operating under Taheal - تأهيل’s supervision. With Josour, we are focused on one thing: building practical bridges between technical and vocational students in Egypt and employers. The goal is to help students leverage digital tools to connect to real opportunities and clearer career paths. The work is now happening where it matters most: inside the schools.

Catalonia’s healthcare and life sciences startups raised a record €350M in 2024, up 55% from the year before. Of that, AI-driven startups alone raised €347M, accounting for over half the region’s life sciences funding. Barcelona now ranks as Europe’s #2 healthtech hub, and 33rd globally (StartupBlink 2025). As I map this ecosystem to support client tools and new ideas, the momentum is undeniable. 1. Genetic & Biotech Therapies: SOM Biotech uses AI to repurpose drugs, Aptadel Therapeutics develops RNA cancer treatments, and Integra Therapeutics leads gene-writing innovation. 2. Neurotechnology & Brain Health: INBRAIN Neuroelectronics creates brain-machine interfaces, Time is Brain detects strokes early, and Eodyne Systems S.L. delivers VR-based neuro-rehab. 3. Diagnostics & Early Detection: Loop Dx builds rapid sepsis tests, deepull offers culture-free diagnostics, and The Blue Box Biomedical Solutions detects breast cancer through urine samples. 4. Digital Health & Telemedicine: Mediktor provides AI triage chat, Doctoralia España connects patients to doctors, and humanITcare supports chronic care remotely. 5. Chronic & Elderly Care: MiMIAT Health tracks chronic conditions, OXEEN | Soluciones Inalámbricas para la Digitalización de Residencias y Hospitales monitors elderly in hospitals, and Enfermera.io offers nurses on demand. 6. Medical Devices & Wearables: Biel Glasses builds smart eyewear, Cactus (YC X25) Engineering makes IoT medical tools, and SensingTex develops stretchable health tech. 7. AI & Data-Driven Health: Methinks AI helps with stroke triage, Health Lean Analytics improves health data use, and AIS Channel trains surgeons with AI. 8. Wellness & Preventive Tech: Broomx delivers immersive wellness, Mammoth Hunters personalizes fitness apps, and Lucid Drinks crafts brain-boosting beverages. 💼 How to Engage Barcelona’s Healthcare Ecosystem - Supercharge Innovation: Pair SOM Biotech’s AI with Mediktor’s triage tools and Doctoralia’s platform to create end-to-end digital care. - Optimize Operations: Use Health Lean Analytics, Oxeen’s real-time monitoring, and Cactus Engineering’s devices to streamline clinical workflows. - Enhance Strategy with Data: Tap into Methinks AI, Deepull’s diagnostics, and EODYNE’s VR tools to drive smarter patient care. 📩 I’ve supported 500+ startups with market research, fundraising, and marketing automation. Who really has most power in music streaming value chain? That was a case study discussion at IESE Business School I witnessed today. The discussion evolved: — Labels hold the keys to promotion. — Users “pay” with money and attention. — Platforms set the rules through distribution and algorithms. — And creators? Seems like seen as least influential. If we look deeper: Spotify itself needed 8 years of relentless investment — in content library, R&D, marketing, and sales— before reaching profitability in year 9 (after cutting 17% of its workforce as a part of optimization strategy, to be mentioned). For HR and organizational development, this is a powerful reminder: Value chains are not linear — influence shifts depending on strategy and timing. Long-term investment in people, processes, and culture may be invisible in the short run, but decisive for success. Transformation often demands painful choices, like restructuring. But will this lead to sustainability? Will see. The questions I took with me after the discussion: as leaders, how do we balance immediate market pressures with long-term organizational resilience, when there are no right answers in advance? And whose “voice” do we amplify inside our companies — distributors, customers, shareholders, or creators? #casestudy #hrm #strategicinvestment #lifelonglearning #hrbp #power #overcomingchallenges #strategy

Founders & Hexa Partners I read this in Acresis mid-year review and thought it is worth sharing with all of you... * A key theme we observe in successful Founders is RESILIANCE. Being able to control the controllables and be comfortable with ambiguity. Indeed be excited by the need to constantly assess and adjust to changing conditions. The resourcefulness, coupled with their agility, of our Founders is remarkable. * Successful founders make bold decisions and own them with a real sense of DECISIVENESS. “In a world that’s changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks.” —Mark Zuckerberg * Markets shift. Founders must evolve or dissolve. ADAPTABILITY. “Pivoting isn’t a sign of failure—it’s a badge of honor.” —Eric Ries * The grind matters more than the grand idea. RELENTLESS EXECUTION “Ideas are easy. Execution is everything.” —John Doerr. This means our successful founders have a formal cadence and discipline to their monthly reviews and quarterly meetings. * Founders win by solving real problems for real people. CUSTOMER OBSESSION. “We’re not competitor obsessed, we’re customer obsessed.” —Jeff Bezos. Our founders understand their enterprise customers better than their competitors. * Finally…trust is the currency of long-term success. INTEGRITY. “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.” —Warren Buffett. Our Founders’ employees and customers trust them implicitly and explicitly.
