Hidden Kingdom: The Insect Life of Costa Rica (Zona Tropical Publications) Paperback – November 15, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
Encounter some of the most beautiful creatures in Costa Rica in Piotr Naskrecki's Hidden Kingdom. This book is a visual journey into the world of the insects and their relatives that dominate all terrestrial habitats in Costa Rica through their sheer numbers, biomass, and the ecological functions they perform. Naskrecki's stunning photographs serve as both a tool to help identify the insects that a visitor to Costa Rica is likely to encounter, and as an illustration of their diverse behaviors and ecological roles.
Through high-impact imagery and engaging narrative about insects and their evolutionary history, this book, an ideal companion on a visit to Costa Rica, reinforces or awakens in the readers their innate curiosity about the less appreciated elements of life on Earth. Each section of the book presents fascinating and useful facts about Costa Rica's insects. Naskrecki's photographs show the variety of morphological adaptations, survival strategies, and interlocking roles that insects play in tropical ecosystems.

Editorial Reviews
Review
I recommend this volume to both biologists and anyone with an aesthetic interest in nature. Naskrecki's high-quality photographs, on appropriately sized pages (10 x 10 inches), should convince even the most ardent Web surfers and app aficionados that there is still a place for books.
― The Quarterly Review of BiologyThe text is excellently written and scientifically accurate, yet thoroughly accessible and engaging for lay readers. Many photographs were taken in natural environments, and a few under controlled lighting, but all images are of high quality, revealing details that highlight the unique beauty of each specimen. This work would make an excellent educational coffee-table book.

I continue to be astounded not only by Piotr's knowledge, but his passion and teaching skills. Over the years, he's given me new perspectives on the insect world more times than I can count. And now comes a masterwork. And the best part is, it's written in a conversational tone that's accessible to people of all ages. This book is a pure pleasure, as well as a great education.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2018Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseBird watchers and other nature lovers planning to visit Costa Rica would surely enhance their visit by exploring Piotr Naskrecki’s wonderful book, “Hidden Kingdom: The Insect Life of Costa Rica”, beforehand. While Naskrecki’s marvelous photos of a kaleidoscopic array of Costa Rica’s insects and his insightful observations of their fascinating life histories will certainly whet the appetite of any naturalist bound for that country, the real value of this book is far greater than as a beautiful enticement for Costa Rica bound eco-tourists. “Hidden Kingdom” is an enticing and captivating portal that will lead you to a fascinating world that exists - largely unseen - at your very feet and in your very own backyard. In introducing us the marvelous insects of Costa Rica, Naskrecki also invites us to begin to see and appreciate the small but wondrous living things that are all around us wherever we might be. The clearest endorsement of Piotr Naskrecki’s, “Hidden Kingdom: The Insect Life of Costa Rica”, I might offer is that, upon finishing this book, I immediately bought and read both of his other books as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2019Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseBeautiful photographs! This highly readable book about Costa Rica’s insects (and other arthropods) was accessible and engaging to my 10 year old, and also informative for me. So many stunning photos of insects in their natural habitat, interspersed with pictures to highlight features or contrast species. I highly recommend the book. Only disappointment is that the cover stock on the paperback version is slightly flimsy. Interior pages are good quality, though.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is an amazing book in so many ways. This has both the beauty of a photo book and the details needed to make this for the information junkie in you. Clearly written, practical information and stunning photography of difficult to image insects. Great job, you will not be disappointed...
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe book is absolutely brilliant, Mr Naskrecki's wonderful photography married with his extensive knowledge about invertebrates is just a huge treat.
However, the book was just thrown into a thin plastic packaging with no other protection whatsoever and it arrived with a creased cover. This book will join my wildlife book collection and it's a shame it's not in a good condition. Sadly, I don't have time for returns and it seems to be the only option to deal with such issues on Amazon so I thought I'd just let other buyers know here there might get a damaged book and/or need to return as a result.

Fontana PaoloReviewed in Italy on January 8, 20185.0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous book full of deep biodiversity knowledges
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchasePiotr Naskrecki is a great naturalst, entomologist and photografer. He loves bidiversity and he knows it in deep and in a wide view. Each person who loves insects, Nature or in other words Biodiversity, will find in these pages full of extraordinaries photos and deep texts, a reason to be happy to live on our planet ad will charge his energy and motivation to act and fight for Nature conservation and sustainability. The extraordinary images are organized in themes fundamental for the study of insects and for the understanding of the subtle mechanisms that regulate life on earth. The insects of Costa Rica thus become a miniature of our planet, and by reading these pages we take a journey into Nature and into ourselves. The extraordinary aspects of nature presented by Piotr Naskrecki in this book, make us feel, like Homo sapiens, less extraordinary and far from this nature, of which we are instead an integral part.

Moi, RichardReviewed in France on January 16, 20183.0 out of 5 stars Un peu décevant
