What if AI doesn’t replace jobs, but removes the need to work altogether? That’s the striking idea from Turing Award Winner Raj Reddy, University Professor of Computer Science and Robotics and Moza Bint Nasser Chair at Carnegie Mellon University. From his early years at Stanford in the 1960s to leading the Robotics Institute, he has shaped AI across six decades, from its rudimentary beginnings to today’s AGI era, his perspective carries rare depth and clarity. In his talk on April 10, 2026 at Carnegie Mellon University, he challenges the dominant narratives around AI. He cuts through the hype and asks deeper questions that stay with you. We are told two extreme stories. The Core tension of AI: Doomers vs. Abundance -> AI will threaten humanity. -> AI will create limitless abundance. His view is more grounded. The future is neither. It is messy, gradual, constrained by society & not technology. The human centered transition. AI didn’t “suddenly become intelligent”. It became accessible. Few topics: Are We Already at AGI? The Biggest Misconception: “AI makes education irrelevant” The Future of Work: 3 Possible Outcomes Humans + AI = new system of work But the real power of the talk lies in the questions it raises: • If one person can do the work of ten, what happens to the other nine? • If AI can answer almost everything, what becomes the purpose of education? • If productivity increases tenfold, do we work less or create more? • If machines handle most tasks, what remains uniquely human? • If work becomes optional, what drives ambition, identity, and meaning? His answers are not simplistic, but directional. Last Friday, I had the opportunity to attend the 6th Industry Staffing Conclave “The India Edge: Employment Reforms” in Mumbai, hosted by the Indian Staffing Federation. The conclave brought together highly qualified industry leaders to discuss the evolving employment landscape, regulatory reforms, and the future of the staffing ecosystem. One message stood out clearly : even in the age of AI, the importance of human capital remains central to sustainable growth. Technology may transform processes, but people continue to be the true drivers of progress. Key takeaways from the conclave: • The staffing industry plays a vital role in formalizing India’s workforce. • Ongoing discussions with the Finance Ministry on GST rationalization could positively impact the sector. • Effective 1st April’2026, payments for supply of manpower services will attract 1–2% TDS (depending on recipient category) instead of higher professional service deductions, a move expected to improve cash flows and bring greater clarity to the industry. • Employment reforms are evolving from compliance requirements to strategic growth enablers. As someone overseeing HR and Finance, these policy and regulatory insights are highly relevant as we continue strengthening our compliance and people frameworks.
