About
Vineet Nayar is former CEO of HCL Technologies and Founder of Sampark Foundation. He is also author of the highly acclaimed management book “Employees First, Customers Second: Turning Conventional Management Upside Down” (Harvard Business Press, June 2010).
Vineet is an acknowledged management visionary and a radical thinker who architected HCLT’s transformation from $0.7 billion in 2005 to a $4.7 billion Global Technology Services Company with over 85,000 employees spread across 32 countries in 2013. This radical transformation led Fortune to recognize HCL as “the world’s most modern management” while BusinessWeek named HCLT as “one of the world’s most influential companies”; praise that has led HCL’s innovative management practices to be taught as a case study at both the Harvard Business School and London Business School.
Vineet was also recently chosen by Fortune Magazine for its first ever, global “Executive Dream Team” 2012 which has been described as an “all-star leadership” that “could coalesce and dominate in any industry”. This is in addition to his inclusion in the elite “Thinkers 50 List” in 2011-12 which is a definitive listing of the world’s top 50 business thinkers.
In 2005, he established Sampark Foundation (www.samparkfoundation.org) with the aim of enabling large scale innovation in education. His work in this area has seen Vineet being cited in Forbes magazine's prestigious '48 Heroes of philanthropy List 2016'.

Vineet Nayar shared thisOLD HABITS. NEW MASTERS. As children, we waited for stars and marks They decided how we felt about ourselves We grew older The system did not change Only the faces did Teachers became bosses Stars became ratings And once again, we wait to be told how we did Here is the uncomfortable truth Appraisals matter But not as much as you think What matters more is something no appraisal captures Are you even on the right path Because you can score well and still be stuck You can score average and still be moving forward An appraisal is a moment It is not momentum It is a gate Not the garden If your rating made you happy, anxious, or restless Pause and ask a harder question Am I building something that actually matters to me I wrote about this in my latest Mint article. Vineet Nayar shared thisWHEN MACHINES DECIDE WHAT TO LEARN NEXT Let me say this bluntly. We are not prepared for what is coming, and while most of the attention today is focused on what these systems can do, that is not where the real issue lies. The real issue is that AI models may be starting to decide what they need to LEARN next, and that changes the nature of the relationship we have had with machines for decades. For a long time, we operated with a clear understanding that humans decided and machines executed, and that clarity gave us a sense of control and comfort, but that line is now beginning to blur in ways we do not fully understand. As that line weakens, the consequences are not gradual but immediate, because security becomes more fragile, behaviour becomes harder to predict, and the pace of progress becomes difficult to control. Even if one company chooses to slow down in the interest of safety, another will not, which means this capability will spread, and in all likelihood it already has begun to do so. This is not about fear or resistance to change, but about recognising the control we may be giving up by choosing to look the other way at a moment that demands far greater attention. Because the moment systems begin to decide what they want to learn, we are no longer leading the change, we are reacting to it. And the question that follows is uncomfortable, but necessary to ask. Will we even know when we LOST control?

Vineet Nayar shared thisYOU CAN NEVER DO IT ALONE We like to believe impact comes from strategy. That scale comes from technology. That leadership comes from the top. It doesn’t. Real change is not designed. It is built. Slowly. Patiently. On the ground. In classrooms no one is tracking closely enough. In moments no dashboard will ever capture. At Sampark Foundation, whatever progress we see today across 8 states, reaching over 2 crore children, has very little to do with plans. It has everything to do with people. Our SPARKS. They show up when it is inconvenient. They stay when it is difficult. They solve what cannot be escalated. No spotlight. No noise. Just work that matters. This video is for them. Because behind every system that works… there are people who refuse to give up on it. You can never do it alone.

Vineet Nayar shared thisKEEPING HUMANS FIRST IN THE AGE OF AI For years, we told a generation: Work hard. Learn skills. Build a career in IT. And they did. They followed the path. They trusted the system. They delivered. Now the rules are changing. Not slowly. Not gently. But all at once. And the uncomfortable question is: Did we prepare them for this world? Because this shift is not just about technology. It is about identity. When what you have learnt all your life is no longer enough… where do you begin again? This is why the conversation on AI feels incomplete. We talk about productivity. We talk about companies. But we don’t talk enough about people. Behind every “efficiency gain” is someone trying to understand what it means for their future. If we get this moment right, we can create a generation that thinks, adapts, and leads. If we don’t, we risk leaving many behind who did everything we asked of them. The future of Indian IT will not just be written in code. It will be written in how we prepare people for change. Vineet Nayar shared thisWHY DO MOST INNOVATIONS NEVER SCALE? Organisations celebrate pilots. They reward new ideas. Yet very few innovations travel far enough to change a system. Because scaling innovation is not about the brilliance of an idea. It is about building the conditions where many people can contribute to it. That is the central theme of “Genius at Scale: How Great Leaders Drive Innovation” by Linda Hill, Emily Tedards, and Jason Wild, published by Harvard Business Review. The authors describe three roles leaders must play if innovation is to scale. First. Design organisations where experimentation is possible, and people feel safe challenging the status quo. Second. Connect silos. Many good ideas die simply because they cannot travel across teams, partners, or institutions. Third. Mobilise an ecosystem so innovation moves beyond a project and becomes a movement. What struck me most while reading the book is this. We often look for individual genius. But the real challenge for leaders is enabling collective genius. The book illustrates this through examples from organisations around the world, including Sampark Foundation. A useful reminder. INNOVATION MAY START WITH AN IDEA. BUT IT SCALES ONLY WHEN MANY PEOPLE MAKE IT THEIR OWN. The real question for leaders is simple. Are we celebrating ideas, or building systems that allow ideas to scale?

From insightful discussions to grounded perspectives, the summit reinforced a clear direction: AI is not the solution on its own, it is a tool that must strengthen teachers, and improve learning outcomes at scale. Key conversations focused on how AI can support foundational learning, enable data-driven decision-making, and most importantly, work alongside teachers not replace them. One small idea can ignite a revolution just as a single matchstick can start a fire. One such idea - putting employees first and customers second - sparked a revolution at HCL Technologies, the IT services giant. In this candid and personal account, Vineet Nayar - HCLT's celebrated CEO - recounts how he defied the conventional wisdom that companies must put customers first, then turned the hierarchical pyramid upside down by making management accountable to the employees, and not the other way around. By doing so, Nayar fired the imagination of both employees and customers and set HCLT on a journey of transformation that has made it one of the fastest-growing and profitable global IT services companies and, according to BusinessWeek, one of the twenty most influential companies in the world. Chapter by chapter, Nayar recounts the exciting journey of how he and his team implemented the employee first philosophy by: • Creating a sense of urgency by enabling the employees to see the truth of the company's current state as well as feel the "romance" of its possible future state • Creating a culture of trust by pushing the envelope of transparency in communication and information sharing • Inverting the organizational hierarchy by making the management and the enabling functions accountable to the employee in the value zone • Unlocking the potential of the employees by fostering an entrepreneurial mind-set, decentralizing decision making, and transferring the ownership of "change" to the employee in the value zone Refreshingly honest and practical, this book offers valuable insights for managers seeking to realize their aspirations to grow faster and become self-propelled engines of change.

I was truly inspired by how confidently children and young people expressed the challenges they face in the digital world. Their understanding was deep and thoughtful, and they clearly emphasized the role of parents, teachers, and peers in shaping safe online experiences. What stayed with me was their clarity of purpose—some aspire to join the administrative services, police services, others to become a cricketer or a doctor. What connected all these aspirations was a shared desire to serve their country—to serve India. At this formative stage, what we nurture in children becomes foundational to who they will become. Their intent and sense of purpose give us immense hope. At the same time, it reminds us of our responsibility to ensure that the ecosystem around them is enabling, protective, and empowering. In this context, #MahaSankalp2026 is a bold and timely step under the leadership of the Maharashtra State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (#MSCPCR), in partnership with ChildFund India reminding all stakeholders that it’s time to consciously build and shape the young minds—especially in the digital age. #MahaSankalp2026 marks the beginning, and we now seek partners to help scale take this vision across the entire state of #Maharashtra. #DigitalSafety #WebSafeandWise #SaferInternet #YouthVoices #ParentingInDigitalAge #CollectiveResponsibility

Bridging the Experience Gap in Indian Boardrooms The link to this post is https://lnkd.in/dpUvGBhC While traditional expertise remains crucial, Boards of larger capital companies especially need to diversify their non-executive director pool to address emerging challenges and opportunities. Experience areas well-represented on Indian Boards include: * Finance & Accounting: Chartered Accountants, financial advisors, and bankers with expertise in auditing, financial reporting, and compliance. * Legal & Regulatory: Lawyers and legal experts ensuring adherence to corporate law, SEBI regulations, and other statutory requirements. * General Management/Leadership: Seasoned professionals with a track record of leading large organizations, bringing strategic oversight and operational acumen. * Industry-Specific Expertise: Directors from the company's core sector providing domain knowledge. However we need to seek out Independent Directors who bring experience in areas that have been historically underrepresented: * Digital Transformation & Technology: * Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG): * Business Resilience ( elaborated in the post https://lnkd.in/ddr-C6zN ) * Consumer Behavior & Market Insights: * Human Capital & Talent Management: More reading... * Tags #IndependentDirectors #BoardroomDiversity #ID #IDs #IndianBusiness #SkillGap #ESG #DigitalTransformation * Perspective of the promoter regarding Independent Directors ( ID ) on the Boards of their Companies... Prof Jawahar Lal Raina RAAPTI- Transforming Leftouts to Standout.

PRESS NOTE For Immediate Release Date: 24 November 2025 RAAPTI – World Leaders in Skill Development (R) RAAPTI Welcomes the Introduction of the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) Bill in Winter Session 2025 RAAPTI – World Leaders in Skill Development (R) warmly welcomes the Government of India’s decision to introduce the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) Bill, 2025 in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament beginning 1 December 2025. The establishment of HECI as a single, overarching regulator—bringing together UGC, AICTE, and NCTE under one coordinated framework—marks a historic reform in India’s education ecosystem. This long-awaited structural transformation, envisioned in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, is poised to bring clarity, efficiency, transparency, and accountability across higher, technical, and teacher education sectors. Dr. Jawahar Lal Raina, Founder & Chairman of RAAPTI, said: > “The introduction of the HECI Bill is a bold and visionary step that will redefine the quality and governance of higher education in India. A unified regulatory framework will reduce duplication, remove confusion, and ensure that students, institutions, and industry benefit from streamlined standards and transparent processes. The proposed enhanced powers to enforce norms and impose financial penalties will further strengthen accountability and protect student interests.” He further added: > “The four-tier structure of NHERC, NAC, HEGC, and GEC represents a modern and progressive approach to regulation, accreditation, funding, and learning outcomes. This will not only enhance academic flexibility and credit mobility but also accelerate India’s transition toward a globally competitive knowledge and innovation ecosystem.” RAAPTI believes that the HECI Bill will support India’s aspiration to become a global hub for education and skill development, aligning curricula with emerging technologies, fostering research culture, and strengthening equity and access. As an organisation committed to empowering youth with world-class skills, RAAPTI looks forward to collaborating with institutions and policymakers to ensure the successful implementation of this transformative reform. *Courtesy Meeting of SC/ST and Women Entrepreneurs’ Delegation with the MSME Minister* New Delhi: With the objective of strengthening India’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector and economically empowering Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and women entrepreneurs, a delegation led by *Mr. Subir Paul, National President of the Indian Chamber of Commerce for SC/ST and Women Entrepreneurs*, paid a courtesy visit to the *Honorable MSME Minister, Mr. Jitan Ram Manjhi*, along with office bearers from Northeast and South India. The meeting included detailed discussions on promoting entrepreneurship and ensuring that government schemes reach the grassroots level. *Ms. Seema Kiran (National Joint Secretary – Administration),* *Ms. Wobeni Kithan (National Joint Secretary – Northeast Region),* and *Mr. Y. Rama Rao (South Indian General Secretary)* were also present with Mr. Paul. During the discussion, emphasis was placed on prioritizing accessible financial assistance for SC/ST and women entrepreneurs. Mr. Subir Paul requested the minister to make loans available to micro-industries at interest rates below 9 percent, so that new entrepreneurs can more easily start and expand their businesses. He stated that financial support at lower interest rates would give new direction to entrepreneurship among marginalized communities. The discussion also highlighted the need to run awareness campaigns to take various MSME Ministry schemes to every village. The delegation suggested organizing local training programs and entrepreneurship workshops to inspire youth and women to become self-reliant. A proposal was also put forward to invite and honor women entrepreneurs in Delhi to give their achievements national recognition and inspire others. Additionally, while discussing issues related to the development of entrepreneurs in Northeast India, the delegation invited the minister to visit the region. The meeting is being viewed as a positive step toward empowering SC/ST and women entrepreneurs. It is hoped that in the coming time, concrete policy measures will further strengthen the MSME sector and accelerate entrepreneurship across the country.

Here are three of the most significant, persistent philanthropic challenges in India as of 2025, based on scale, complexity, and the gap between needs and current funding / deployment: 1. Rural Primary Education Quality & Learning Outcomes: • Despite near universal enrollment (thanks to RTE and midday meals), learning levels remain extremely low ASER 2024 showed only 45% of Class 5 students in rural India can read a Class 2 level text, and 40% can do basic division. • Government spending is high (4–4.5% of GDP), but outcomes are poor due to teacher absenteeism, weak training, inadequate pedagogy, and language barriers. • Philanthropic funding is fragmented; most large education funders focus on higher education fellowships, ed-tech pilots, or urban private schools, leaving the hardest rural government school improvement work severely under-funded. 2. Childhood Stunting and Early Childhood Nutrition (0–6 years): • India still has 35% of children stunted (NFHS 5, with slow improvement). Stunting in the first 1,000 days causes irreversible cognitive and physical damage. • While ICDS and POSHAN Abhiyaan exist, last mile delivery of take home rations, behavior change communication, and micronutrient supplementation remains weak in many states (Bihar, UP, Odisha, Jharkhand, MP). • Relative to the scale (30–35 million stunted children), domestic philanthropic capital in evidence based early childhood nutrition interventions is tiny compared to global health or climate funding. 3. Clean Air / Air Pollution (especially urban and Indo Gangetic plain): • Air pollution causes 1.6–2 million premature deaths annually in India and slashes average life expectancy by 5–7 years in northern states (AQLI 2024–25 data). • Sources are diverse and politically sensitive: crop burning, coal power plants, vehicular emissions, household biomass use, brick kilns, construction dust, etc. • While the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) exists, enforcement and financing gaps are massive. Philanthropy in India has historically shied away from air pollution (seen as “too technical” or “government’s job”), so domestic funding is dwarfed by the problem size. Most work is still driven by a handful of international foundations and small Indian players. Honorable mentions (also major but slightly narrower): • Adolescent girls’ education & agency (especially in northern states) • Skilling and dignified livelihoods for the bottom 200–300 million • Mental health infrastructure (almost non existent outside a few metro cities) • Climate adaptive agriculture for smallholder farmers However, above three stand out because they affect hundreds of millions directly, have enormous economic ROI if solved (human capital losses from stunting and poor education alone cost India 4–10% of GDP annually), and remain dramatically under funded by Indian philanthropy relative to their scale and solvability.

It is inspiring to see how meaningful collaborations can transform learning opportunities for young students. At Thinksharp Foundation, our mission has always been to bridge the rural–urban education divide by providing access to quality learning infrastructure, digital tools, and STEM-based education that equips children with 21st-century skills. Our partnership with METRO Global Solution Center IN reflects how corporate organizations and social institutions can come together to create lasting impact in rural Maharashtra. Through this collaboration, students are gaining access to engaging learning resources, modern educational tools, and experiential STEM learning that sparks curiosity and strengthens problem-solving skills. For many children in underserved schools, such initiatives open doors to opportunities they may not otherwise have. Beyond infrastructure, this partnership is helping build confidence, creativity, and aspiration among students — empowering them to dream bigger and pursue brighter futures. Grateful to the entire METRO GSC India team for supporting this initiative and for believing in the power of education to drive change. Looking forward to continuing this journey of impact together. #CSR #Education #STEMEducation #RuralEducation #Partnerships #ThinksharpFoundation #METROGSCIndia Rameshwar Khairnar GANESH ZANJAD Nandini Chatterjee Shridhar Karale Devendra Fadnavis Gajanan Patil IAS

🌍 Towards True Inclusion: Insights from Shri Himal Tewari at the 12th National Conference on Disability At the Inaugural Panel on Sustainable Development Goals & Disability Inclusion during the 12th National Conference on Disability, Shri Himal Tewari (CHRO & CSR Head, TATA Power Community Development Trust) shared a compelling truth — inclusion goes far beyond mobility and accessibility. He emphasized that: ✨ PwDs face unique challenges and often cannot express them openly — what they need most is mental and emotional support. ✨ Disability is not a stereotype; every journey is unique. ✨ Companies need an evolution — not quotas, but mainstream roles where PwDs work as equal contributors. ✨ Every employee with a disability has the right, pride, and space to meaningfully contribute to the ecosystem. Let’s build inclusive ecosystems where everyone feels supported, understood, and empowered to thrive. 💙 📌 To collaborate, support, or learn more about Sarthak’s initiatives: 🌐 Website: www.sarthakindia.org Sarthak Educational Trust | National Abilympic Association of India | Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, GOI | University Grants Commission (UGC) | MyGov India | Tata Group | Tata Steel | Amazon #12thNCD #DisabilityInclusion #SDGs #InclusionForAll #SarthakEducationalTrust #TataPower #MainstreamingNotQuotas

Fundraising is not about chasing donors. It’s about building strategy. I’ve seen strong social impact ideas struggle simply because the funding approach wasn’t structured. That needs to change. On March 5–6, 2026, Right Dots is hosting a 2-day in-person Fundraising Certification Program in Chennai for NGO leaders, social entrepreneurs, and CSR professionals who want practical tools in donor strategy, proposal development, CSR alignment, and AI for fundraising. If you’re serious about building sustainable funding pipelines — this is for you. Register here: https://lnkd.in/gFC-aEXb

Over the years of building AssisTech Foundation and working closely with the innovation ecosystem, I’ve had the privilege of meeting many entrepreneurs with disabilities. What stands out every single time is their lived experience—deep, authentic, and powerful. Their ideas don’t come from problem statements on paper; they come from real life. I’ve been constantly inspired by their passion and their aspiration to build solutions that can transform the lives of millions of people with disabilities. For a long time, I carried a dream of creating a program that truly backs these founders—from idea to scale—with the right mix of trust, capital, mentorship, and ecosystem access. The imaginATe Fellowship Program is that dream coming to life. Launched by AssisTech Foundation (ATF) in partnership with Bajaj Finserv CSR, imaginATe is designed specifically for entrepreneurs with disabilities. It is a 9-month immersive, paid fellowship, followed by 6 months of post-fellowship support, focused on helping founders build, refine, and scale impactful ventures. I’m glad to share that the application deadline has been extended to 17 December 2025. Apply here: https://lnkd.in/dsXS8y6j This is just the beginning—and I’m excited to see what this next generation of founders will build.
