🎤 “How bad insights from good research can kill your design ideas” — that will be my mini-talk at The Hague Lean UX meetup on December 11. And yes, there will be pizza and beer, too! So, you’ve conducted research. Maybe user interviews or prototype testing. Now you have lots of “insights.” Or do you? The thing is, not everything you saw, heard, recorded, or wrote down is an actual insight. Some of it is dangerous to use, yet it hides under the guise of the “user’s voice.” It’s not me, it’s what users said. These aren’t my words; they did it during testing. What makes this even trickier today is the growing presence of GenAI features in UX tools — they can easily add another layer of bias if left unsupervised. In this talk, I’ll share my experience of distilling real UX insights from bias and buzz, inspired by my recent work in the B2B SaaS space — specifically on a software platform for worker safety and sustainability. It was a joy to present and discuss our ever evolving practice at Stby of teaming with AI in Utrecht at the learning lab of UXinsight to fellow (design) researchers from industry and academia. We share a lot of experiences with AI and everyone has some unique ones too. But do we know and do we share the lessons we learn from these collaborations with AI in our practices? Turns out many of us are still facing assumptions of AI speeding up work, making work more efficient and therefore research can be done by smaller teams with faster deliverables. We discussed the importance of getting out of this narrative and steer towards the new things we can do now we have AI in our toolbox and as a team member - both! So yes we can do some traditional work faster (e.g. transcriptions) but also some new work that deepens the quality of what we do (e.g. get a deep understanding of the topic we are working at the start via desk research with Deep Research). This is what we mean by 'meaningful collaborations with AI', and we have started to onboard other organisations to this approach as well.

I’ve just completed the 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 '𝗔𝗜 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀' 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 and wanted to share my own thoughts on what I learned that's relevant user researchers, service designers and UX designers. 👉 𝗟𝗦𝗘 𝗔𝗜 𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲: 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘁? AI is often talked about in abstract terms, but this course grounded it in questions of justice, fairness and governance. 💰 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁:  Around £500 ⏰ 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:  3 weeks, roughly 6 hours per week but you can complete it in much less if you don’t want to do the extra reading or coursework. ❓ 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿:  People who are fairly new to AI and its ethical dimensions – those who need to understand the philosophical grounding (justice, fairness, accountability) around AI ethics but don’t need deep, technical detail. 👀 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳:  It has a strong slant towards philosophy / ethics theory rather than current AI trends or the latest GenAI tools and ethics surrounding them. UXR impact happens at different levels. But it is often challenging to connect research initiatives directly to the effect on our business and beyond. It helps to make those levels explicit. The multi-level UXR Impact Framework by Karin den Bouwmeester does exactly that. We can measure impact on 3 levels: 1. 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 → Are we making life better for users, business… or even society? 2. 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 → Are our insights shaping real business decisions? 3. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 → Are we doing research consistently and intentionally? Defining metric examples at all levels makes it easier to determine what can be measured and shows our impact. Pick those measurements that align best with your team’s current goals and challenges. Don’t try to track everything. 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞: It’s not about proving a perfect causal link, but you’re making a compelling case for UXR's contribution. How to push 40 people through the Double Diamond in 1 hour 🙈 and teach them the value of customer-centric problem solving. Our workshop ‘Introduction to Public Service Design’ was just one of many at this week’s Digitaal & Burger Centraal event by FOD Beleid en Ondersteuning. And a rollercoaster it was! In under 60 minutes together we explored: 1. Understanding the cost of service failure and the impact on both user and organisation. 2. Starting with empathy and discovering real user painpoints by listening and taking note. 3. Defining the *real* problem behind what the user is trying to tell you. 4. Being creative and visual in finding an optimal solution to the problem. 5. Pitching the solution back to the user and gathering feedback before investing big €€€ in design-and-build. The back-and-forth between vibrant duo conversations and moments of absolute silence and deep thinking felt almost magical at times. And although we saw people laugh with each other’s painful personal experiences, no one laughed *at* the other side, or call them a stupid user for not understanding how the service is supposed to work. The key takeaway: no service is without failures. But you need to invest in solving them at the root, instead of dealing with angry customers all the time. Or losing them altogether and wondering why your business metrics aren’t living up to expectations. So here’s a warm recommendation: have your management and executives follow one of these sessions. It only takes an hour of their time, but they might start to think differently about investment priorities. Get in touch. We’ll organise one for you too! If you can’t control a system, does it make sense for designers to “promise” transformation? This provocative idea sits at the heart of the article A Systemic Perspective on Service Design, where the authors, Daniela Sangiorgi, Mieke van der Bijl-Brouwer, Lia Patrício, and Jennie Winhall challenge the comforting narrative of controlling systems and the possibility of designing them. As Daniela Sangiorgi puts it, “The aim of Systemic Design is therefore not to ‘design’ systems, but to look at and explore complex problem situations ‘systemically’, and to ‘intervene’ in the problem situation in an attempt to shift it into a desired direction.” This chapter is a timely reminder that Complex systems cannot truly be “designed” or controlled:  → designers create interventions (leverage points),  → portfolios of safe-to-fail experiments guided by a shared, evolving vision across micro/meso/macro levels. “In four years, most websites as we know them will disappear.” That’s not a prediction from a futurist. It’s a design reality we’re already moving toward. In this episode of the UX Rotterdam Podcast, host Nauko Leong talks with Henk Haaima, Creative Director at Total Design, about the profound shift UX designers are facing as AI agents / LLM's begin to act on our behalf. “Grant applications typically require a linear plan—one that outlines everything from start to finish. But if you want to use AI in your practice, whether for artistic output or internal workflows, you need to work empirically, as we say in the agile world. You set a goal, implement an idea, evaluate whether it worked, and adjust as needed. The rigid system of predefining outcomes to ensure success doesn’t work when implementing innovation because you can’t foresee its full impact—you need room to pivot.” Thanks Evelien Sinke for capturing Marijke Hessels' and my thoughts around the use of AI in the cultural sector. My takeaways from this conversation are: 👉 The goal is to create art that moves us — this can only be created through the creative touch of human beings. 👉 AI can support and accelerate this skill and create new ways of looking at our art and narratives. 👉 We need more ethical datasets and AI models, or an overview of models and how to use them if they are already here! 👉 The cultural sector can play a vital role in holding up the mirror towards the tech parties that create AI. Show them the darker side and effects of it and help them understand what they could or should reconsider. 👉 And — of course, one of the most important aspects from my point of view: we need more space in the creative process to build on each other's knowledge from other experiences (and see this as a strength), and work empirically and agile (instead of explaining all the steps in the process before you can begin). European Accessibility Act (EAA)....hmmmm During a recent discussion about accessibility with my colleagues, we came across simple, but striking example: ✅ A small black font on a white background passed the accessibility test. ❌ A set of large white letters on a light blue background did not. At first, it seemed counterintuitive. Someone asked: “How is that possible? I can read the big white letters from across the room!” The answer was simple: “They’re easy for you, because your vision is good. But someone with a visual impairment might not even realise there’s text there.” That moment stayed with me. It made me think of my parents. Their eyesight isn’t what it used to be. Glasses or a magnifying function can help, but only if they know there’s something to look at. If they don’t realise there’s text on the screen, they’ll never know they’re missing something important, perhaps even something essential. That thought really hit home. Accessibility isn’t about how we experience something, it’s about how others might not. Designing for accessibility isn’t just compliance - it’s care. It’s empathy, awareness and respect. So the first thing I did this morning was inform my client about some potential accessibility issues on their website. #Accessibility #InclusiveDesign #EmpathyInAction #WebAccessibility #UXDesign
