The Republic of Kazakhstan celebrates many holidays throughout the year. These holidays are separated into three categories: national, public and professional/other.

Under the decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, all national and public holidays are a day off for workers. In this decree, the President also stipulates that any holiday that falls on a weekend date shall be celebrated the following business day and workers are to be given that day off.

The only exception to the law regarding public holidays is contained in the Article 4, Clause 96 of the Labour Code. This clause states that January 7, the Feast of the Nativity for Orthodox Christians, and Kurban-ait – the Holiday of Sacrifice (dates vary based on the religious calendar), a Muslim holiday, are observed with time off from work.

In addition to national holidays, there are over 30 professional holidays and many additional holidays are celebrated within the different provinces of Kazakhstan. However, professional and other types of holiday celebrations are not recognised by the government as public holidays and workers must attend their jobs on those days.

The President of Kazakhstan has the authority to add professional holidays or to remove them from the list of official dates.
