The Pacific islands of Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap, and Kosrae voluntarily joined together to form the modern Micronesian federation in 1979. They no longer wished to be a part of the general Pacific Trust Territory that the US had controlled since the end of World War II. Prior to World War II, these islands had been dominated by the Empire of Japan. And before that, the islands had been under the sway of Germany and Spain.

While the individual island communities of Micronesia were long independent before the Colonial Era, yet, it has only been in recent decades that they have been independent in the form of a larger union. Independence Day is a time to celebrate both the long cultural heritage of islanders and the more recent political attainments.
