National holidays in Slovakia are set forth in the Constitution and are regulated for employees by the Labor Code. The President has the right to add holidays each year if desired, but this has not happened since the right was bestowed upon the presidency.

Many of the national holidays in Slovakia are based on the Christian faith and these holidays occur based on the lunar cycle. Because of this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs releases a list of national holidays and their dates each year. Employers are required to observe these holidays regardless of what dates they fall on.

All other national holidays in the Slovak Republic are only celebrated on their actual dates. If the holiday occurs on a weekend it is not moved to the following Monday. The government does not require employers to provide any special accommodations to employees for national holidays that occur on Sundays.
