The laws governing holidays fall on the governing office of the Falkland Islands. Because final laws are approved in the United Kingdom public holidays are declared in the local newspaper upon approval. The government of the Falkland Islands generally issues the dates of the holidays for three or more years in advance to accommodate employers on the island.
In the past, Margaret Thatcher’s birthday, the former Prime Minister of England, was celebrated as a holiday in the Falkland Islands. However, this holiday has not been observed since 2009.
The government of the Falkland Islands reserves the right to declare special memorial holidays with advanced notice. These holidays are one-time events. The last special holiday was to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2011.
