Clever budget friendly ways to reuse coffee grounds and tea bags for cleaning gardening and simple everyday home fixes.
Hi there friends…
If you’re anything like me, you love tips that feel simple, comforting, and genuinely helpful. The kind that don’t require a trip to the store or a big change in routine. Just little ideas that quietly make life easier and a bit more budget friendly. If I have to buy a ton of things to do a hack I might as well get the read thing right lol???
Today we’re talking about something most of us use every single day… coffee and tea. I know that the coffee grinds, tea bags and tea leaves add up in my house!!! Before you toss those used coffee grounds or tea bags into the trash, let’s take a look at how they can still be put to good use around your home and garden. These are real life hacks. Nothing fancy. Nothing complicated. Just smart little ways to stretch what you already have. Note: if you are into the environment simply never through these items into the trash… if you are not using them for a hack just put them in a waterproof bag and let them add up… then add them to your soil outdoors. It makes the soil rich and you are recycling right into the earth!
Grab a fresh cup of your favorite brew and let’s get started…
Smart Ways to Reuse Used Coffee Grounds
1. Naturally deodorize your fridge or trash can
Let used coffee grounds dry completely and place them in a small open bowl. They help absorb unwanted odors and keep things smelling fresh. Be sure to place that little bowl in a place where it won’t get shoved. Then there is my favorite thing to use… a glass cheese shaker from the dollar store. Nice and heavy so it does not spill… glass for easy cleaning and a metal top with holes all ready and waiting to take in those little odors!
2. Scrub pots and pans gently
Coffee grounds are mildly abrasive and work wonderfully on stuck on food. Add a drop of soap and a small spoonful of grinds to a damp sponge and scrub.
3. Remove cooking smells from hands
Rub a little coffee grounds on your hands after handling garlic or onions. Rinse well and the smell fades away. It really works!
4. Help acid loving plants thrive
Sprinkle cooled coffee grounds into the soil around hydrangeas, roses, or blueberries for a gentle boost.
5. Discourage garden pests
Coffee grounds can help deter ants and slugs when sprinkled near entry points or garden beds.
6. Add to compost
Coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen and make a fantastic addition to compost piles.
7. Keep fireplace cleanup dust free
Sprinkle damp coffee grounds over cold ashes before sweeping to keep dust from floating through the air.
8. Create a simple exfoliating scrub
Mix coffee grounds with a bit of coconut oil for a quick hand or foot scrub that feels like a little treat. Why not try the one I use all the time!
Cozy Ways to Reuse Used Tea Bags
9. Soothe tired eyes
Cooled tea bags placed over closed eyes can help reduce puffiness and feel wonderfully calming. This is also a tried and true one.
10. Freshen shoes naturally
Dry tea bags and tuck them into shoes overnight to absorb odors. Some shoes might need extra tea bags lol!
11. Clean mirrors and windows
Brewed black tea makes a gentle cleaner that leaves glass streak free when wiped with a soft cloth.
12. Calm irritated skin
Tea bags can help soothe minor burns, bug bites, or skin irritation. I remember when I was little… my mom used to brew tea and cool it… then soak wash cloths in it and lay it on my sunburn. It worked really well. It has a great way of drawing out the sting. A little tea bag helps those tiny little problems perfectly!
13. Refresh carpets and rugs
Dry tea leaves completely, sprinkle lightly over carpet, let sit briefly, then vacuum. These can be tea leaves from a tea bag or loose tea from your tea infuser… just make sure they are dried fully.
14. Give houseplants a boost
Tea leaves contain mild nutrients that plants enjoy when mixed into soil occasionally.
15. Refresh wooden surfaces
Black tea can gently enhance the look of wood furniture and floors when wiped lightly. Great for little touch ups.
A Little Cozy Thought Before You Go…
I love ideas like these because they remind us that being mindful with our homes doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Small thoughtful habits really do add up. Reusing what we already have is kind to our budgets and feels good in the process.
If even one of these tips helps you solve a small everyday problem or save a few dollars, then this post did exactly what it was meant to do. – take care … Andrea @ The Cottage Market
