A new report commissioned by the Wellcome Trust, in partnership with More in Common, finds that 84% of people in Britain have at least ‘some’ trust in science, whilst 38% say there is now too much information available to know what is true about science. That sense of information overload highlights the importance of clear, accurate, and accessible information - and why #FactsMatter. You can read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eNxT2dPf

Full Fact CEO Chris Morris warned about the health of our information ecosystem at the International Journalism Festival in Perugia yesterday. Chris said that if we don't implement sensible regulation then we are sub-contracting those decisions to the tech executives in Silicon Valley and Beijing. He said: "I don't think most people want that...and the public pressure from below is going to be one of the key ways we win this battle." Watch the full panel here: https://lnkd.in/eAUmUK3c

We were delighted this week to have two of our team, Nasim Asl and Frances Rougvie, take part in an exciting new project from the Scottish Youth Film Foundation. The initiative brings together a team of young journalists who will be covering the 2026 Scottish Parliamentary election through the lens of #misinformation and #disinformation. 🎬 You can watch more here: https://lnkd.in/eJ_5k-nD 👉 And follow their work here: www.futureproof2026.co.uk

UPDATE: Since this blog was published, TikTok has acknowledged the error and confirmed that the video has been reinstated. We’re glad to report this outcome.
We recently received a community guidelines violation from TikTok on a video featuring one of our fact checkers, where she offered practical advice on how to avoid misinformation related to conflict in the Middle East. As a result, the video was removed and is no longer accessible to viewers. The irony isn’t lost on us that a video aimed at reducing harm and encouraging critical thinking was flagged for “violent and criminal behaviour.” It raises a big question: why is TikTok penalising content designed to highlight misinformation? As we mark #InternationalFactCheckingDay, our latest blog unpacks our recent experience with the platform’s automated moderation systems. https://lnkd.in/enM_TjQY

This International Fact-Checking Day, the British Red Cross and Full Fact are sharing three simple questions to help you spot misinformation. False or misleading information can be dangerous, in both times of emergencies and the quieter moments in between. But remember that everything we share is grounded in fact.

The Rycroft Review into foreign financial influence and interference in UK politics has been published. Our response: "The Rycroft Review recognises that a little misinformation can go a long way in our increasingly fragmented politics, and that the UK’s defences against political disinformation are worryingly weak, with relentless exposure creating risks like political disengagement and radicalisation. "We welcome the Review's recommendations around increasing the investigatory powers of The Electoral Commission, prioritising dealing with hostile state actors' interference, and tightening the regulation of online political advertising, which align with positions Full Fact has been advocating for. We also welcome that the Review highlights the benefits of political ads libraries and the importance of voter education to counter misinformation and disinformation. We urge the government to take this opportunity to significantly strengthen the Representation of the People Bill, to protect our democracy from misinformation and disinformation, and to restore public trust in our politics."

I am pleased that Full Fact was able to present to the Oversight Board, provide additional expert evidence and that our contribution is widely sighted in the report published today. Some thoughts 1 - Everything in our work is connected to protecting Freedom of Speech and I am pleased to see this referenced to clearly 2 - Whilst presenting to the board. I implored them to 'dare to dream' about a world where we can have more than one tool to address bad information online. I firmly believe community notes and professional verification work can happen side by side to the benefit of all. 3 - Vitally, not all information is equal. Some claims made online are more harmful than others and we have to develop the terminology and systems to create a collective agreement on this and how to address the most harmful things quickly. This area needs the guiding hand of professionals, to ensure the most pressing content is reviewed promptly and well to give people the context they need online as soon as possible. The full report is online here. My congratulations to Paolo C. and the team. https://lnkd.in/eCM5z27m
We're calling on Meta to test community notes before it expands, be transparent with data, demonstrate its safeguards actually work and report to the Board every six months before going live in high-risk countries. Full Fact was really pleased to speak to the Meta Oversight Board about community notes, and we welcome its findings that they are inadequate as a standalone solution to the problem of harmful misinformation. We all value independent expertise in other walks of life, and this should be no different. Fact checking organisations around the world play a vital role in helping to ensure that people have access to accurate information, enabling them to make informed choices on the issues that matter to them. Working alongside crowdsourced solutions, we can help create a better information environment. The all-pervasive influence of social media and GenAI chatbots on so many lives is an issue which matters to everyone. https://lnkd.in/e5-khf8Y
