Shot of the day

After a frosty walk through the nearby, rather gloomy forest just before the turn of the year, my wife and I were heading home. I had taken my new Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art out for a “walk” as well. As always, I told myself it’s better to have the camera with me than to leave it at home—maybe something would jump right in front of the lens.

But after quite some time in the cold, with the light fading and the fog thickening, even shooting wide open at f/1.4 would have barely given me enough time to focus if a deer had decided to pass by. So, as tradition goes, it felt like another unsuccessful outing.

Half frozen, we made our way back, hoping to still catch the New Year’s celebrations. And then, on the meadow right in front of our house, I suddenly stopped in my tracks.

There it was—the shot of the day.
