Does AI mean the end of open source? No, but it is a stress test. An often-forgotten truth: today's AI revolution was built almost entirely on Linux & open source. Without these foundations, the rapid rise of AI simply wouldn't have been possible. But AI is also putting real pressure on the open source community, from AI-generated pull requests overwhelming maintainers, to organisations drifting further from the open foundations that made them strong in the first place. What we see today is that the focus is shifting from training models to making AI production-ready; on their own hardware, within their own environments, with full control over data & infrastructure. As Peter puts it: "Open source remains an unlimited playground & breeding ground for innovation. That power isn't going anywhere."
