Consumers are still spending on tech, but upgrades are now more intentional, according to our latest survey. Tech companies are circling their wagons, trying to crack the code on the next generation of devices consumers actually want. It's not going to be easy. 76% of people wait to upgrade until the newer devices feel "clearly worth it," and 73% keep their devices as long as they still work. That means tech buyers are discerning and hard to sway unless the latest features offer a clear and tangible benefit, according to the 3,715 US tech consumers polled for the 2026 CNET Group TechPulse Research Study, conducted by PCMag parent company Ziff Davis. One of my brilliant teammates is leaving PCMag after a four-decade career. And not for the reason you’re probably expecting. In tech journalism, especially these days, survival alone can feel like an achievement. Michael Muchmore didn’t just survive—he stuck around, he evolved, he helped set the standard, and somehow made it all the way to a true retirement after nearly 40 continuous years. That kind of longevity feels almost mythical. I’m in awe of the stamina and the impact he’s had not just on PCMag, but on generations of readers and colleagues (including me) who've learned from him. Last week, I had the opportunity to join a panel at Amazon’s AWS Publishing Symposium to discuss the most impactful media industry shift since print gave way to online publishing. The big question: How to build direct relationships with audiences in a world where AI is obliterating web discovery? The big takeaway: Those that lead with trust, continue to invest in authority, and are committed to meeting their users wherever they may be are the brands that will win. I came away feeling hopeful that there is a path forward for brands like PCMag that have spent decades building authority through rigorous testing, smart data-driven storytelling, and reader-first journalism.
