Huge milestone as we built an initial dataset for Africa Mining Watch in just one day. Congrats to our partners the Pulitzer Center and Code For Africa (CfA) in pulling this off! Super validating day for Earth Index. "Journalists from across Africa came together on Earth Day (April 22, 2026) to help build a powerful mining investigative tool for their own reporting community. About 25 journalists—most of them covering mining on the continent—joined geospatial experts for an online mapathon, a collaborative mapping event. It was part of a joint effort by the Pulitzer Center, Code for Africa, and Earth Genome to build Africa Mining Watch (AfMW), a groundbreaking tool that uses satellite imagery and AI to detect mining activity on the continent." https://lnkd.in/g42_nVjD

Last month, Clark University Center for Geospatial Analytics jointly with Radiant Earth convened industry and academic researchers for a technical sprint focused on addressing foundational challenges in Earth Observation (EO) embeddings and moving the community toward shared standards. Participants worked to establish best practices for embedding storage, cataloging, and documentation. Ryan Avery, Senior Machine Learning Engineer at Wherobots and a sprint participant, shares his key takeaways of the event in this new blog. I'm happy to share that, with support from Taylor Geospatial Radiant Earth and LGND AI, Inc., we've finished producing a global GeoZarr mosaic for the AEF embedding dataset (2017-2025). This effort began 7 months ago from conversations within the https://fieldsofthe.world/ community about the need to make embedding data products more accessible to spur scientific research around GeoAI. It was a collaborative effort across the entire community — cloud providers, nonprofits, research labs, professional service companies, commercial startups, and open source developers all contributed to creating this data product!
