About us

At Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), we exist to inspire and enable life outside for everyone. We believe that it’s in the wild, untamed and natural places that we find our best selves, so our purpose is to awaken a lifelong love of the outdoors, for all. Since 1938, we have been your local outdoor co-op, working to help you experience the transformational power of nature. We bring you top-quality gear and apparel, expert advice, rental equipment, inspiring stories of life outside and outdoor experiences to enjoy alone or share with your friends and family. And because we have no shareholders, with every purchase you make with REI, you are choosing to steward the outdoors, support sustainable business and help the fight for life outside. So whether you’re new to the outdoors or a seasoned pro, we hope you’ll join us.

REI’s Product Impact Standards set clear expectations for the more than 1,000 brands we partner with and our own Co-op brand, helping ensure the gear we sell reflects our values and what our members expect.   Our 2026 update raises the bar on product quality and inclusive design while continuing to push sustainability and accountability across the outdoor industry.   “Our products should reflect who we are as a co-op,” said Nani Vishwanath, senior strategist of inclusive design. “By focusing on quality gear that lasts and more inclusive design, we help members choose products they can trust.”   Take a look at what’s new and how these updates build on the progress we’re already making: https://lnkd.in/efp87WyN

The co-op is deeply saddened by the passing of mountaineering legend Jim Whittaker. He was REI's first full-time paid employee, our second CEO and a lifelong champion of living a life outside. Jim became the first American to summit Mount Everest in 1963. But he will be remembered for more than that, including enduring efforts to protect the outdoor places we love. Jim's legacy will live on in the communities he built and the countless people he inspired to get outside. We owe Jim our deepest gratitude for his leadership and are inspired by his example. It is now our responsibility to carry forward his mission. Linked below, read more on Jim, as he reflected last year on a life outside, a life well lived.

We know cooperative action works. Since 2021, our community has sent 2.5 million letters to Congress via the REI Cooperative Action Network to fight for life outside. As a result, we have helped protect more than 250 million acres of public lands, secure nearly $28 billion for state and local outdoor places, and pass 41 historic wins to protect the outdoor spaces we love and expand everyone’s ability to enjoy them. This progress belongs to all of us. And while there’s more work ahead, we’re proud to do it together. Thank you for speaking up.

What does chasing joy every single day look like? “The Life We Have” follows Rob Shaver, an REI employee, whose three-year daily running streak, totaling 1,175 days, carried him through decades of battling terminal lung and bone cancer. His goal was simple: run at least one mile every day. And he did, even on his hardest days, through treatment, pain and uncertainty. Through his persistence and resilience, Rob shows us that even in life’s most precarious chapters, every step matters and every moment is a gift. A story of mortality, movement, and meaning, we’re honored to help share Rob’s powerful perspective with the world. Produced in partnerships between REI Co-op Studios, Wondercamp and Sam Price-Waldman. Watch the full film: https://lnkd.in/eCPGcwj3

We're kicking off 2026 by revealing our new collection of trips, designed and delivered by Intrepid Travel for REI. Check them out and let us know what you think: www.rei.com/travel

Our new collection of trips, designed and delivered by Intrepid Travel for REI, are officially live! With iconic and uncommon sights guided by experienced local leaders, these domestic and international trips are made for anyone with a love of the outdoors. From hiking in Alaska or the Grand Canyon, to trekking to Everest Base Camp, to kayaking along the Amalfi Coast, there’s something for everyone. I’ve loved watching this partnership come to life. These trips bring together what we do best at Intrepid: experience-rich, small group adventure, with REI’s deep expertise in the outdoors and backcountry. It’s a special combination. And there are exclusive discounts and perks for REI members too! I haven’t properly explored Japan’s hiking trails, so I reckon that will be first on my list. If you’re ready to adventure outside the ordinary, you can check it out here: https://www.rei.com/travel
