Joe Amara Executive Search is conducting a confidential search for a rapidly growing, private equity-backed energy platform building highly structured partnership-driven assets with accounting complexity that closely mirrors upstream oil & gas joint venture and unitized facility environments.

We are seeking a Controller to architect and lead financial reporting of a geothermal power generation business during a critical stage of growth. This leader will own financial reporting, accounts payable, royalty and partner billing workflows, and future ERP system implementation, ensuring the company’s financial foundation is institutional-grade and fully auditable.

Responsibilities

• Lead all monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities across HoldCo, OpCo, SPV, and partnership structures
• Own all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and month-end close
• Lead budget-to-actuals analysis, variance reporting, and FP&A-oriented insight generation
• Build scalable AP, partner billing, and future AR processes
• Oversee royalty payment accounting, verification, reconciliations, and stakeholder reporting
• Manage unitized and partnership-level accounting structures
• Support project finance activities including draw requests, lender reporting, and cost tracking for drilling campaigns and power plant construction
• Develop audit-ready reporting packages for leadership and external partners
• Establish controls for annual audits and partner-led audit rights
• Serve as internal expert on COPAS-inspired partnership accounting
• Partner with external CPA and bookkeeping teams during initial setup
• Lead ERP evaluation and implementation (SAP or equivalent)

Qualifications

• 10–20 years of progressive accounting and controllership experience from upstream oil and gas
• Strong upstream oil & gas accounting leadership experience. Experience within independent oil and gas companies, understanding of upstream project accounting, AFEs, and capital project cost controls strongly preferred
• CPA required. Strong technical accounting skills (GAAP)
• Experience with royalty accounting, JV structures, and audit defense
• Experience working within a private equity-backed environment or reporting directly to PE sponsors
• Prior ERP implementation and controls buildout experience
• PE-backed or startup environment experience is preferable
• Able to work in-office 5 days a week
