Internship Duration & Hours: 10 weeks, 35 hours per week.
Purpose of the Internship
The purpose of the Internship is to provide an opportunity for those enrolled in engineering educational programs to gain hands on learning about the Wastewater Industry. The intern will apply engineering principles to support LRWRA’s mission of providing safe, reliable, and efficient wastewater service.
Examples of Duties
Key Responsibilities
Assist LRWRA personnel with performing inspections and acceptance testing of new wastewater infrastructure.
Assist LRWRA survey crews with gathering information to prepare construction drawings.
Input and analyze data to identify trends or improvement opportunities.
Assist with updating engineering documents such as agreements and specifications.
Assist with reviewing drawings and specifications for development projects.
Assist with visual inspections of grease interceptors and investigate complaints with LRWRA personnel.
Attend bid openings, pre-construction meetings, and monthly progress meetings.
Assist other departments such Environmental Affairs (laboratory) and Operations as necessary.
Typical Qualifications
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma/GED.
Actively enrolled in Collegiate Engineering Degree Program (Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or related field).
Basic understanding of engineering principles and concepts.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work in both office and field environments, including industrial settings.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with CAD software, technical drawing, and/or engineering design tools.
Interest in public utilities and/or the wastewater industry.
Skills & Learning Outcomes
Application of engineering concepts in wastewater facility planning, design, operations, and maintenance.
Insight into project planning, system performance, and inspections.
Understand regulatory and safety requirements within utility facilities.
Development of data analysis skills
Exposure to engineering review of proposed wastewater infrastructure.
Working Conditions
Combination of office work, site visits, and facility inspections.
Use of tools such as computers, tablets, inspection instruments, engineering drawings, and PPE.
Physical requirements such as walking in the field and in facilities, climbing hills and stairs, and light lifting.
Supervision & Mentorship
The intern reports directly to the Supervisor, Project Engineer, Developer Funded.
The Supervisor, Project Engineer, Developer Funded provides technical guidance, mentorship, and daily oversight.
