Base pay range
The Life Sciences Associate Underwriter underwriting team in the review, quoting, issuance, and servicing of new and renewal business. This role provides underwriting and operational support across the account lifecycle and helps ensure submissions, quotes, binders, endorsements, and policy documents are handled accurately, timely, and in accordance with underwriting guidelines, authority requirements, and regulatory standards.
This position plays an important role in maintaining service standards, supporting underwriting throughput, and delivering responsive service to brokers and internal partners. The role also supports disciplined documentation and workflow execution as underwriting activity and servicing volume increase.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting Support
- Occasionally, assist underwriters with intake, review, and triage of new and renewal submissions from brokers.
- Review submissions for completeness and identify missing information needed for underwriting review, including applications, loss runs, supplemental forms, financials, schedules, and other supporting documentation.
- Track and follow up on subjectivities and outstanding requirements with brokers and internal teams.
- Support account clearance and related pre bind processing activities, as applicable.
- Support underwriting file setup and documentation standards in internal systems, including underwriting workbench and policy administration tools, as applicable.
- Process transactions for new business, renewals, endorsements, cancellations, reinstatements, and related policy servicing activities in accordance with company procedures.
- Prepare binders, policy documents, endorsements, notices, and related correspondence for underwriter review and release within workflow standards.
- Review issued documents for accuracy and consistency with quoted and bound terms.
- Maintain complete and organized electronic underwriting files, including correspondence, forms, notes, and transaction records.
- Help manage end to end servicing for assigned accounts or segments under underwriter or manager guidance.
- Respond to broker inquiries regarding submission status, documentation requirements, processing status, and basic servicing questions in a timely and professional manner.
- Coordinate with underwriting, operations, compliance, accounting, and claims as needed to resolve issues and support account handling.
- Support renewal follow up and quote status follow up to help maintain service quality and retention efforts.
- Follow underwriting guidelines, authority protocols, documentation standards, and applicable surplus lines requirements.
- Maintain accurate risk, policy, and transaction data in underwriting, rating, and policy administration systems.
- Identify and escalate discrepancies, missing information, and processing issues in a timely manner.
- Support internal and external audit requests by locating and organizing file documentation and transaction history.
- Support data quality initiatives by helping maintain clean records and complete underwriting documentation.
- Assist with production reports, renewal tracking, service metrics, and underwriting support reporting as needed.
- Contribute to workflow improvements that support efficiency, consistency, and broker service.
- Participate in training on products, systems, forms, underwriting guidelines, and internal procedures.
- Provide backup support to underwriters and underwriting support teammates during high volume periods or absences.
- Support team execution discipline in a collaborative review environment, including timely file preparation and follow up for peer or manager review workflows.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree or bachelor degree preferred, especially in business, finance, risk management, insurance, or a related field.
- 1 to 3 years of insurance experience preferred, ideally in commercial lines, specialty lines, E&S, underwriting support, brokerage operations, or policy processing.
- Entry level candidates with strong administrative, analytical, or customer service experience may be considered.
- Basic understanding of property and casualty insurance concepts and terminology.
- Familiarity with Life Sciencess business and surplus lines processes is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation, data entry, and transaction processing.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills with a professional, service oriented approach.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with underwriters and internal partners in a high volume environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Experience with underwriting workbench, policy administration, rating, or document management systems is a plus.
- Experience supporting casualty, excess liability, umbrella, or specialty commercial lines underwriting.
- Prior experience with broker facing service and submission follow up.
- Property and Casualty license or ability to obtain if required for the role or jurisdiction.
- Insurance coursework or designations such as AINS or AU are a plus.
- Accuracy and Attention to Detail: Produces complete and accurate work and maintains high documentation standards.
- Service Orientation: Responds promptly and professionally to brokers and internal partners.
- Execution and Follow Through: Tracks outstanding items and drives tasks to completion.
- Judgment and Problem Solving: Identifies issues, asks the right questions, and escalates appropriately.
- Time Management: Prioritizes work effectively in a high volume environment.
- Adaptability: Works well with changing priorities, evolving guidelines, and varied risk profiles common in Life Sciences
Base salary range for this position is $70,000-$90,000 plus eligibility for a performance-based annual bonus. Actual compensation will be based on experience, education, and geographic location.
