What To Expect Tesla’s Materials Engineering team is seeking a Polymer Materials Engineer with a strong focus on thermoplastics and melt flow simulation (e.g., Moldflow) to help accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of materials science and cutting-edge product development. In this role, you will serve as a subject matter expert on thermoplastic materials across Tesla’s operations, supporting material selection, development, validation, and process optimization. You’ll use a process-structure-properties approach to solve complex problems and lead projects from concept to implementation.
What You'll Do
Act as the subject matter expert for thermoplastics and melt flow simulations
Lead and support material selection and validation with cross-functional design and manufacturing teams
Perform and interpret melt flow simulations to optimize tool design and manufacturing processes
Develop and maintain material standards for new and existing materials
Investigate and resolve complex material-related issues through root-cause analysis
Lead 1-2 development projects focused on advancing materials innovation
What You'll Bring
A collaborative, open-minded attitude and a strong team player
Degree in Polymer Engineering or equivalent experience
5+ years of hands-on R&D experience with thermoplastics
5+ years of experience using melt flow simulation software (e.g., Moldflow, Sigmasoft, Moldex3D)
Deep understanding of polymer science, polymers processing, and plastics product design
Proficiency with analytical tools such as FTIR, DSC, rheometry, and DMA
Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills
Proven ability to work independently in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
Experience in technical writing and developing material standards is a plus
Willingness to travel up to 25%
