Summary of Role
The BDC Controller is a Managing Director–level leader responsible for all accounting, financial reporting, and financial controls for the firm’s Business Development Company (BDC). This role ensures accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and full regulatory compliance, and serves as a key partner to the CFO, investment leadership, compliance, and the Board of Directors. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in BDC accounting, private credit portfolios, and the regulatory framework governing registered investment companies.
Role Responsibilities
Financial Reporting and Account Oversight
Lead quarterly and annual financial reporting under U.S. GAAP (ASC 946).
Oversee SEC filings, including Forms 10-Q, 10-K, and related disclosures.
Manage accounting for complex credit investments, including direct lending, structured credit, joint ventures, and non-accrual or restructured loans.
Oversee monthly NAV calculations and portfolio accounting accuracy.
Valuation Oversight
Own the implementation and ongoing execution of valuation policies and procedures.
Coordinate valuation processes with investment teams and third-party valuation firms.
Prepare valuation analyses and materials for Board review and approval.
Regulatory Compliance
Oversee financial compliance with Investment Company Act requirements applicable to BDCs, including asset coverage, qualifying assets, leverage, and affiliated transactions.
Audit, Board & External Relationships
Serve as primary liaison with external auditors for quarterly reviews and annual audits.
Support CFO and Audit Committee with financial reporting, valuation, and audit materials.
Coordinate responses to regulatory inquiries and audit findings.
Controls, Systems & Infrastructure
Maintain and enhance internal controls over financial reporting and valuation.
Drive improvements in accounting systems, processes, and reporting as the platform scales.
Oversee relationships with administrators, custodians, and other service providers.
Leadership and Team Management
Lead, develop, and mentor the BDC accounting and reporting team.
Partner with senior leadership on strategic initiatives and new investment structures.
Desired Experience
15+ years of relevant experience with BDC accounting and reporting, Private Credit or Direct Lending Funds, Investment Company Accounting (ASC 946), and valuation frameworks
Demonstrated experience interacting with external auditors, regulators, and boards of directors.
CPA Strongly Preferred
Exceptional technical accounting expertise and judgment.
Ability to operate at a senior leadership level within a sophisticated asset management organization.
Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with executive leadership and board members.
Detail-oriented with a commitment to financial integrity and operational excellence.

Work Arrangement: AGL currently operates on a hybrid work schedule, with employees in the Manhattan office on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and working remotely on Monday and Friday.
