“Structure liberates.” It sounds counterintuitive… But when it comes to data visualization, it might just be one of the most freeing ideas there is. In our latest SWD podcast episode, Simon Rowe chats with Maxene Graze about something that quietly transforms teams: data visualization style guides. When every chart starts from scratch, you’re not being creative—you’re burning energy re-making design decisions that could already be defined. A good style guide: ✔ reduces decision fatigue ✔ creates consistency across dashboards and decks ✔ makes collaboration smoother ✔ helps stakeholders focus on insights instead of formatting The big takeaway? Structure doesn’t restrict creativity—it protects it. When foundational design choices are defined, your energy shifts from formatting to thinking. From styling to storytelling. And that’s where the real impact happens. I’ll share the episode link in the comments 🎧

When we treat data like a case file, everything changes: We curate, organize, validate, and decide. That’s what makes something a true data product — not its format, but its impact. Helping busy business leaders drive action through elegant, impactful analytics | Let’s make your data sing.
What is a "data product"... really? In our latest episode, Noelle Butler describes a data product like building a case file to solve a crime. 🕵🏻♂️ That’s exactly right. It’s a curated, trusted set of data designed to answer a specific business question... and drive action. Just like a case file: - You gather the right evidence - You organize it around a clear objective - You validate what’s reliable - And you use it to make a decision If no one would notice when it breaks… it’s probably not a data product. Exit value is often won or lost in the details — not the dashboards. In this podcast clip, David Whitcombe, Founder and Managing Director of Data Vision Services, explains why the real value creation during an exit comes from data cleansing and deep commercial insight, not just relying on FP&A tools. FP&A systems are excellent for running the business at a “good enough” level. But when it comes to an exit, moving from 95% accuracy to 98–99% accuracy can materially increase enterprise value. That final layer of precision gives investors, private equity funds, and sponsors the confidence they need — especially when an expert eye has validated the data beyond what flows automatically from ERP or billing platforms. It’s this rigor that turns numbers into conviction. With automation at your fingertips, it's fair to wonder why anyone still needs to study data structures and algorithms. On a recent episode of HanselMinutes, Eric Lippert gets right to the point: automation doesn't replace problem-solving — it depends on it. Within the first few minutes, he breaks down why understanding how problems are solved still matters, no matter how advanced our tools get. Listen here for more (or wherever you get your podcasts): https://hubs.ly/Q0408XYW0 If the conversation resonates, his book Fabulous Adventures in Data Structures and Algorithms explores those ideas in depth: https://hubs.ly/Q0408XQx0
