Even academics that have stayed within universities are often funded by the AI industry. And the effect that that has had on knowledge production is akin to the effect we would imagine if most climate scientists were bankrolled by the fossil fuel industry. Like, it just—we would not get a clear picture of the climate crisis, and we’re not getting a clear picture of the true limitations and capabilities of AI, especially these frontier models. And this is one of the things that, when I speak with policymakers, also is central to their inability to consult with independent experts to put together sensible policy for holding the companies accountable or even just, like, fact-checking the company’s claims."
