It comes down to broad consumer appeal and highly optimized monetization models. 🤝 - Apps dominating downloads - like TikTok, ChatGPT, Temu, and Netflix excel because they’ve become embedded in everyday routines. Whether it’s for entertainment, social connection, or convenience, these apps meet daily needs. Their clean UX and smart cross-platform distribution help them scale globally and convert first-time users into loyal ones. 🪄 - On the revenue side, games like Monopoly Go, Last War: Survival, and Royal Match (also our partner, Nexon, with Mabinogi 👀 ), along with subscription giants like LINE, Disney+, and yes, TikTok again, turn user engagement into earnings. From IAPs to gated content and regular updates or events, their strategies keep users spending consistently. 💸 Across all regions, one thing is clear: apps that adapt to local market preferences, combine stickiness with utility, and maintain robust monetization systems consistently top both downloads and revenue charts. 🥇

Sometimes, you have to be bold! I had this slightly crazy idea: what if we turn off the lights? 💡 At Back Market, we try to steer our performance investments with incrementality, not just attribution. Over the past years we’ve run many Conversion Lift Studies with media partners, but measuring efficiency beyond incremental installs (i.e., downstream value) has remained difficult for us, especially on iOS (hello SKAN!), because privacy changes have made the signal noisier. 🤯 So this summer we took a different route: a “Go Dark” test. We paused all app install campaigns in two markets for several weeks to answer one simple question: → Are app campaigns truly driving growth… or mostly taking credit for what would have happened anyway? 🧪 Why “Go Dark” is powerful? A key advantage is that it evaluates the whole strategy at once. Single-channel tests can be biased because a “control group” on one platform may still be exposed to another channel (cross-channel cannibalization). Here, by pausing the full app acquisition setup, we get a cleaner read on what the strategy really contributes. 🧐 What we learned (high level) In a mature market, more than a third of our app downloads were truly incremental. In a growth market, more than half were incremental. And importantly: this incremental growth translated into downstream value, with efficiency that compared favorably to more “traditional” acquisition levers we benchmark against (e.g., classic SEA and Meta acquisition setups). ▶️ The takeaway This wasn’t just a measurement exercise. It was a confidence reset. We manage apps doing $200k+/month. Here’s how we actually run A/B tests for monetization 👇 Our biggest lever at this scale isn’t “more features”. It’s relentless A/B testing on monetization & pricing 👇 1️⃣ We only test what can move revenue We don’t waste time on button colors. We focus tests on: – paywall structure – pricing tiers – trial vs no trial – what’s free vs paid Small UX tweaks are nice. Pricing decisions pay the bills. 2️⃣ One big test per app at a time If you run 10 experiments at once, you don’t learn anything. We’d rather have one clean, high-impact monetization test per app and let it run long enough to be meaningful. 3️⃣ We let tests breathe Most monetization tests need 2–3 weeks, not 2–3 days. Especially with smaller volumes or longer trials. Patience is part of pricing. 4️⃣ We care who converts, not just how many A version that converts fewer people but brings higher-LTV users can be the real winner. So we look at: – conversion – churn – LTV per variant 5️⃣ Every test starts with a story We don’t “flip numbers and pray”. Each experiment answers a hypothesis like: “If premium feels like a serious upgrade (not a tip jar), more people will commit annually.” The story tells us what to test and how to read the result. At $200k+/month, this is basically the job: – ask sharper questions – design cleaner tests – make one strong monetization decision each cycle
