In Germany - Domestic collection operates alongside the “world’s largest and highest-performing deposit return system”, which has achieved a 98% return rate on single-use drink containers, according to one company that manufactures reverse vending machines. “There’s also a really strong culture around recycling in Germany,” says Leavesley. “People are really passionate about making sure there’s clean, separated products.” In the block of flats I live in Sydney, the residents have trouble following the contents instructions on the bins resulting in all 3 bin categories being contaminated. In this context, it might be more cost effective for governments to focus on self interest in Australia to get the best results- extending the deposit buy back scheme to all glass and plastic containers. Why has this taken so long?

Takeaway cup recycling made easier in Edinburgh Recycling takeaway cups in Edinburgh is now easier thanks to a collaborative scheme Keep Scotland Beautiful has launched with the National Cup Recycling Scheme and City of Edinburgh Council. Dedicated cup bins will be deployed on Market Street, Waverley Bridge and outside Haymarket Station to collect single-use cups in a new trial to test the effectiveness of on-street cup recycling and see if it is possible to boost the number of cups being recycled in Scotland – currently 4% - and prevent them from ending up as litter or in landfill....

It's a big day for recycling! From today, most councils are legally required to collect food waste from households on a weekly basis without charging for it. They must also provide separate collections for: 1) food plus garden waste; 2) paper plus card; 3) all other dry recyclable materials including glass, metals, plastics and cartons; and 4) residual waste. Local Partnerships LLP has supported a large number of councils in implementing the necessary changes over the last couple of years - congratulations to all of those council officials who have worked very hard to get to this point. UK Packaging PRO has officially launched as the national body responsible for the UK’s packaging recycling scheme (pEPR), backed by over 100 organisations across the industry. £1.4 billion is being invested in Year 1 to improve waste management, collection and recycling.
