Job searching has given me a new appreciation for how complex the hiring process can be. I’ve been reading posts from both job seekers and hiring managers lately, and honestly both sides make good points. I saw one hiring manager mention they received thousands of applications and that some applicants were asking for feedback after being rejected by ATS, but hadn’t even submitted a cover letter. But here’s the part that surprised me. A lot of the application systems I’ve used recently don’t even give you the option to upload a cover letter. When I apply to a role I’m genuinely interested in, the first two things I do are: • tailor my resume • write a cover letter But if the system doesn’t give you a place to upload it… what’s the best move? Do you paste it as the first or last page of your resume? Do you attach it somewhere else? Or does it just sit on your computer never being seen? For the recruiters and hiring managers out there, what do you actually recommend candidates do in this situation?

We reviewed cover letters from 625 hiring managers across US companies last year. 36% spend less than 30 seconds reading them. And 45% check the cover letter before even glancing at your resume.
