Constant change is the new normal—making rigid 10-year career plans a thing of the past. Mark Murphy's latest Forbes article reveals that the professionals who succeed today aren’t those who stick to linear schedules, but those who cultivate key habits (like learning fast and growing networks), challenge themselves before feeling “ready,” and consistently review their trajectory to remain adaptable. My Perspective: "Strategic Flexibility" I'm honored to have Mark feature my insights on strategic flexibility as a critical pillar for modern career success. Instead of betting on a single path: build a portfolio of skills, relationships, and options—what I call “optionality.” It’s about conducting regular assessments: ➤ Are my skills transferable across industries? ➤ Do my connections span diverse fields? ➤ What new opportunities might be unlocked by expanding my scope and perspectives? FACT: Traditional planning is outdated because the world—and each career—changes quickly. The new advantage isn’t predicting the future perfectly but thriving through flexibility: investing in skills, embracing side projects, and seeing every shift as a source of growth. Thanks again to Mark Murphy for including me in this critical conversation and for continuing to surface the mindsets that help leaders and teams grow. Bad news: Work-from-home was never a benefit. Good news: You can still protect your flexibility. During the pandemic, flexibility felt permanent. Log in from anywhere. Build life around work. Choose balance. Now? That window is quietly closing. Recent research shows workers are increasingly forced to defend autonomy rather than enjoy it. Nearly two-thirds of employees say they would not trade remote or hybrid work for a 15% pay raise, making flexibility as valuable as compensation itself. And many professionals are feeling the pressure: • 29% of workers say fear of layoffs makes them hesitant to take time off • 33% feel pressured not to use all their earned paid leave • 49% say workloads make taking vacation unrealistic • 51% expect to stay connected to work even while on PTO All of this turns flexibility from a perk into a test of loyalty. Here’s the shift you need to understand: Flexibility is no longer granted for comfort. It is negotiated for measurable value. Companies now ask a different question: “If we give you freedom, what do we gain in return?” And most people answer it backwards. They explain personal needs. They negotiate too early. They talk about preference, not impact. Here’s what works in 2026: ✔ Earn flexibility by demonstrating output you can’t be managed for by hours alone. Show faster delivery, consistent outcomes, improved team results. Flexibility becomes a tool, not a concession. ✔ Delay the flexibility conversation until after you’ve proven your value. Once hiring managers see you as hard to replace, rules soften. ✔ Reframe flexibility as a business advantage. Talk about focus blocks, global collaborations, reduced meeting overhead. ✔ Build a career story where autonomy equals impact and trust. This makes you a hire that companies want to retain, not tolerate. Flexibility didn’t vanish. Blind, unearned flexibility did. Professionals who keep autonomy in their careers aren’t just asking for it. They are proving it. 👉 Which one measurable result will you use to negotiate flexibility in your next interview? #careercoach #workplaceflexibility #jobsearchindia #interviewpreparation #futureofwork #worklifebalance #careergrowth

The Most Valuable Financial Skill for Long-Term Career Success   Throughout my career placing executives and professionals across industries, I've observed a critical pattern that separates those with genuine career flexibility from those perpetually trapped in roles that no longer serve them.   The distinguishing factor isn't income level, investment knowledge, or even network - it's the ability to resist spending money to impress others.   This rarely-discussed financial skill creates a profound advantage in today's volatile job market.   Professionals who've mastered it can: • Maintain robust emergency funds that allow them to decline misaligned opportunities • Build investment portfolios that generate passive income, reducing dependency on salary • Create career pivoting runways that enable strategic moves rather than desperate ones • Negotiate from positions of financial strength rather than necessity   Meanwhile, their equally talented but financially-constrained counterparts remain tethered to positions they've outgrown, making career decisions based on immediate financial pressures rather than long-term fulfillment.   The irony is striking: the external trappings we acquire to signal professional success - luxury vehicles, prestigious addresses, designer wardrobes - often become the very anchors that limit our professional mobility and decision-making power.   True career independence requires financial independence, which begins with the psychological freedom from caring what others think about your spending choices.   What financial decision have you made that prioritized long-term flexibility over short-term status?   Sign up to my newsletter for more corporate insights and truths here: https://lnkd.in/ei_uQjju   #deepalivyas #eliterecruiter #recruiter #recruitment #jobsearch #corporate #careeradvancement #workplacesurvival #financialindependence #careerstrategist

Work is evolving. The data show us where to focus: => Remote workers aren't thriving. => FIXED ONSITE employees are struggling. New Gallup Global Workplace: 2025 Report shares data to guide where to improve employee experiences and achieve better results. Remote workers need more support--better management and sense of belonging through culture and connection. Hybrid employees are clearly also experiencing high stress which needs addressing. However, notice the data for fixed onsite workers: - Only 19% are engaged - the lowest by far - Only 30% are thriving - the lowest by far FLEXIBILITY is essential for EVERY worker. More autonomy is necessary and possible for ALL onsite workers with different options depending on the role. Flexibility for onsite workers means more: - Shift patterns and options; - Staggered start and end times; - Rotating shifts and compressed workweeks; - Shift swapping; - Floaters and part-time schedules; - Job-sharing to fulfill a full-time role; - Phased retirement and on-demand labor; - Choice of vacation timing. Manufacturing, retail, and hospitality examples: - Land O'Lakes, Inc.: Introduced “flex work” program in 60 of 140 facilities, allowing factory workers to set their schedules vs rigid 12-hour shifts. - RICK STEIN RESTAURANTS: Flexible careers scheme allows staff (all ages and experience levels)to work as little as one shift per week. -Pets at Home (UK): Offers job-sharing and part-time options for store managers supported by manager training and explicit policies. Humans thrive with more autonomy, wherever they work. What greater workplace flexibility can your company offer every worker so that your workforce and business can thrive more?

Many senior leaders I speak with share a common frustration: despite their accomplishments, they feel completely drained by their work. The instinct is often to lean on quick fixes like long weekends, exercise, even extended vacations. While these can provide temporary relief, they don’t solve the real issue. Because the truth is: if your role is no longer aligned with your strengths, values, or vision, no amount of “self-care” will restore your energy. It’s like patching a deeper issue with surface-level solutions. What actually creates change at the executive level is clarity. Clarity around the type of work that energizes you, the leadership challenges that excite you, and the values you want reflected in your organization. Clarity around what season of life you’re in and what you want your career to enable outside of work. Once that clarity is in place, decisions about your next move become easier and opportunities that once felt out of reach start to align naturally. I’ve seen leaders go from burnout to balance, not by “working harder” or taking more breaks, but by making intentional career choices that match who they are today. The result? Renewed energy, meaningful impact, and often, a step up in both responsibility and compensation. If you’re feeling exhausted despite all your efforts to “manage the stress,” maybe it’s not your resilience that needs fixing. It’s the alignment of your work.

WHAT BURNOUT TAUGHT ME – TWICE. I thought I understood burnout after experiencing it in my early 30s. I was wrong. Because when I faced it again in my early 60s, it looked different. It felt different. And recovering from it required a whole new playbook.   The first time, in my 30s, I ignored the warning signs. I was in social services, managing high-stakes responsibilities, and the line between my professional and private life had vanished entirely. Work wasn't just something I did—it consumed me. I believed pushing through was the only way forward—until my body forced a shutdown in the form of arrhythmia. Recovery wasn't a well-thought-out process; it was a flight response. After months on sick leave, I changed jobs. It was far from   📌 actively redefining productivity, 📌 setting boundaries, or 📌 recalibrating 'high performance.'   I was escaping survival mode.   The second burnout came decades later. This time, it was about relentless speed.   As a self-employed professional, I had no imposed structure or external limits, and 80+ hours a week was the new normal. The momentum felt unstoppable. In hindsight, it was speed blindness—an addiction to productivity that masked the exhaustion beneath it.   Then, a drastic change in the business environment. Suddenly, work wasn't consuming all my time. The truth slowly crept in: the burnout had been hidden behind the pace, waiting for a forced stop to make itself known. The diagnosis? Moderate depression.   Recovery took two years of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a slow recalibration of priorities, and a complete shift in how I defined work. Instead of rebuilding the same career machine, I embraced something new. Work became more intentional: coaching, concept development, and writing books became sources of meaningful "second life."   What I learned from burnout – twice?   1️⃣ Burnout is a chronic imbalance that takes different forms at different life stages. The real issue is not just workload – it is the lack of intentional recovery. 2️⃣ Recovery depends on where you are in life. Escaping may provide an immediate BandAid, but burnout left unprocessed sets you up for the same pattern later. 3️⃣ The warning signs change – but ignoring them never works. They may be physical (e.g., arrhythmia or exhaustion) or more subtle (e.g., decision fatigue, inability to feel rested, and eventually, depression). 4️⃣ Burnout never happens overnight; it accumulates. The problem is, when you're inside it, you're the last person to notice. Burnout prevention is about regularly stepping back to ask: Is this pace sustainable?   Burnout reshapes how we think about work, ambition, and balance. If you've been through it, what changed how you approach your career now? If not, how do you ensure you're not running on empty?   (Original photo by Tangerine Newt on Unsplash) #CoachRisto #CareerPerceptions   #Burnout #CareerMoment

𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧. 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐢𝐭. Ever noticed how the toughest phases of your career silently rebuild you — long before you even realize it? I’ve seen it with many leaders. The layoffs. The missed promotion. The corporate politics. The burnout. At first, it feels unfair — “Why me?” But months later, that same challenge becomes the turning point that reshaped how they lead, decide, and show up. 𝐼𝑛 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡, 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒗𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝑩𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘 (2024) 𝒇𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 72% 𝒐𝒇 𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒐𝒓 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒔  𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑏𝑢𝑡𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑏𝑖𝑔𝑔𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑤𝑡ℎ 𝑡𝑜 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑑𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑓𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑔𝑔𝑙𝑒, 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑠𝑢𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠. That’s because transformation isn’t a reward that comes after suffering — it’s the process unfolding inside it. When you stop fighting pain and start decoding it, something powerful happens: - Burnout becomes clarity. - Pressure becomes purpose. - Setbacks become structure. The leaders who rise fastest today aren’t the ones who avoid stress — they’re the ones who reconstruct identity from experience. My work with executives focuses exactly here: Turning professional turbulence into leadership strength and calm focus. Because your next level doesn’t demand more effort — it demands more alignment. Even formal job offers aren’t guarantees anymore. 600+ experienced professionals recently had their onboarding stalled, after accepting confirmed job offers from TCS (today’s ET). Many had already resigned. Some had relocated. Almost all had made personal and financial decisions assuming stability. But this is the new hiring reality. Today’s job market isn’t just unpredictable, it’s volatile, disruptive, and constantly evolving. So how do we navigate it? From my experience coaching professionals through career transitions, here are 3 key lessons that apply now more than ever: 1. Don’t just go by the offer letter; do your due diligence. Before accepting any offer, especially in today’s environment, speak with current employees. Ask: – Are projects stable? – Are there recent onboarding delays? – Is the team expanding or restructuring? Brand names and CTCs are important, but so is clarity on ground reality. 2. Have a contingency mindset, even before you need one. It’s never easy when things don’t go as planned but those who plan for uncertainty recover faster. Maintain a 2–3 month financial buffer. Keep expanding your network even after accepting an offer because as they say- ‘Your network is your net worth’. Think of career moves as chapters, not destinations. 3. Build adaptability like a muscle. The professionals who thrive today aren’t just highly skilled, they’re highly adaptable. Be open to short-term freelance work, upskilling, even temporary pivots. What looks like a detour might open new doors you hadn’t considered. If you’re among those impacted - pause, but don’t panic. This isn’t the end of your journey - just a tough twist in the plot. Use this time to reflect, realign, and rise again - stronger, sharper, and more prepared. #careertransition #adaptability
