Tips for Focusing on Personal Control

Explore top LinkedIn content from expert professionals.

Summary

Focusing on personal control means taking ownership over your actions, thoughts, and environment so you can make intentional decisions and minimize distractions. This approach helps you direct your energy toward what truly matters instead of letting outside influences dictate your day.

  • Set boundaries: Create clear limits for your time, devices, and relationships so you can protect your attention and prioritize what matters most.
  • Choose your response: Recognize what you can control and let go of what you can't by making deliberate choices and practicing mindfulness in stressful moments.
  • Build routines: Establish daily habits, such as planning ahead or journaling, to bring structure and clarity, making it easier to stay focused and avoid mental clutter.

People don’t lose time. They waste it without noticing. A few years ago, I was drowning in busywork. My calendar looked full, but nothing meaningful was getting done. The shift happened when a mentor said: “You’re not overwhelmed. You’re operating without intention.” It stung. But it changed everything. I rebuilt how I worked, and my entire relationship with time transformed. Here are 8 simple steps that helped me finally take control of my attention: 1/ 2-Minute Rule. ↳ If it takes less than two minutes, do it immediately. Pro Tip: Set a 120-second phone timer to trigger instant action. 2/ Getting Things Done Method. ↳ Capture everything so your brain stops juggling unfinished loops. Pro Tip: Externalizing tasks lowers cognitive load and reduces stress. 3/ Eisenhower Matrix. ↳ Stop reacting. Start leading. Pro Tip: Prioritize based on impact, not who shouts the loudest. 4/ Task Batching. ↳ Group similar tasks to eliminate mental switching costs. Pro Tip: One batch for admin, one for creative, one for communication. 5/ Schedule It. ↳ If it’s not on your calendar, it’s not happening. Pro Tip: Treat your calendar like a contract with your future self. 6/ Plan Ahead. ↳ A few minutes of Sunday planning makes Monday feel lighter. Pro Tip: Keep it simple: 3 priorities, not a project plan. 7/ Pomodoro Technique. ↳ 25 minutes on, quick break, repeat. Pro Tip: Intervals prevent mental fatigue and keep you in flow. 8/ Monk Mode. ↳ Protect distraction-free windows so deep work can finally happen. Pro Tip: Communicate your focus blocks, it teaches your team to do the same. Mastering your time has nothing to do with squeezing more into your day. It’s about eliminating the noise so the meaningful work can rise. If you don’t own your time, someone else will. _________ ♻️ Share this with a leader who needs more focus and less chaos. 👋 Want a calmer mind and clearer days? Confession: I worry. A lot. Not just the big stuff (my kid’s health, my team’s happiness, my students’ success)… I also worry about the thing I shouldn’t worry about: what people think of me. I wish I could always trust my instincts. Just do me, be me. But it’s something I really struggle with. Then my friend Jodie Cook handed me a reframe I can’t stop thinking about: “If someone throws a ball to you… you don’t have to catch it.” Same with words, opinions, and judgments. Does that hit you like it hit me? (catch it if you like it!) I realized: I’m a ball catcher. I try too hard. I over-smile. I say yes when I want to say no. I even fake laugh (working on it!). What I need is to become a ball dropper: to remember it’s OK not to click with everyone, to know my preferred “flavors” of people, and to keep boundaries with toxic people (and toxic balls). Jodie and I sat down to map out how to do this. Here are the steps we landed on: 1. Click with the right people You don’t have to be everyone’s idea of heaven. It’s healthy to be closer to a few and neutral with the rest. Action: List the people (or fictional characters!) you naturally click with and don’t. What traits and values repeat? That’s your compass. 2. Focus on what you can control You can’t control reactions. You can control effort, intent, and craft. Action: Grab a pen and paper. Create two columns for things you can control and those you can’t. Cut the paper in half and get rid of the list of the things you can’t control. 3. Be judgment-free Judgment creeps into everything (others and ourselves). • Seeing someone unfit in the gym? Judgment • Seeing someone too fit in the gym? Judgment • Other drivers cut us off? Judgment When you treat judgments like weather (they pass), they matter less… and so do other people’s judgments of you. Action: Pick a simple affirmation (e.g., “I’m grounded in my values”) and repeat it when judgment shows up. 4. Zoom out your perspective When one person doesn’t like us, we globalize it (this means we think a large number of people dislike us). Try this: Visualize on the top of your building → Then visualize your city → the planet → the galaxy. You’ll realize how minor your problems can be. 5. Protect your energy Visualize a clear jar over your head. Let negative words bonk off the glass. Or picture the opinion-ball sailing toward you… and don’t catch it. Let it drop. (Visualization isn’t woo; used regularly, it works.) If this resonates, you’re not alone. I’m a recovering ball catcher turning into a proud ball dropper.

Want to Break Free from the Scrolling Trap? Stop. Don't scroll by. Stay with me. I have a confession—there was a time I’d open social media or shopping apps “just for a minute,” only to realize I’d lost an hour, scrolling mindlessly. It left me frustrated, knowing I was wasting precious time I could’ve spent on things that truly mattered. If you’re in this situation too, you’re not alone. The good news? You can take control. Here’s what worked for me: 1️⃣ Set Clear Boundaries I started using app timers and put my phone on “focus mode”(similar to Do Not Disturb )during work hours or quality family time. Limiting access made all the difference. 2️⃣ Declutter Your Phone I uninstalled apps that weren’t adding value to my day. For social media, I shifted to using only the desktop version, which instantly reduced the impulse to check them. 3️⃣ Rearranged My Screen All productivity apps went to the first screen, while social and shopping apps were tucked away in folders on the last page. Out of sight, out of mind! 4️⃣ Replaced Bad Habits with Better Ones Whenever I felt the urge to scroll, I’d stop and ask myself: What can I do right now that aligns with my goals? Reading a book, journaling, or taking a quick walk became my go-to alternatives. 5️⃣ Turned Off Notifications No more constant pings grabbing my attention. My phone stopped dictating my day, and I regained focus. 6️⃣ Tracked My Time I started monitoring my screen time weekly. Seeing those numbers made me more mindful and motivated to cut back. Think of it this way: Social media and shopping apps are like a dessert—they’re fine in moderation, but overindulging can leave you feeling drained. Your time, however, is the main course—use it wisely to nourish your mind, body, and soul. One thing I’ve learned: "Time wasted is time you’ll never get back. You either own your time or let it own you." If you’re feeling stuck in this loop, I encourage you to start small. Set a timer, log off, and be intentional with your day. What strategies have helped you limit app usage? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments! #PersonalGrowth #TimeManagement #DigitalDetox #Productivity #Focus #IntentionalLiving

Getting Distracted? Here Are Some Focus Habits That Work for Me. We wake up to notifications. We sit down to work and hear the constant ping of emails. Even when we want to focus, something pulls us away—a text, a headline, a quick scroll that turns into 20 minutes lost. The truth? Focus isn’t just about discipline. It’s about setting up your mind and environment to work with you, not against you. Here are some ideas to reclaim your attention: - Protect Your Mental Energy Like It’s Money Would you give away your salary in small, random increments every day? No? Then why give away your attention so easily? Distractions aren’t free—they drain your ability to think deeply. Set clear boundaries: mute notifications, close extra tabs, and put your phone out of reach when working. - Stop Treating Your Brain Like a Machine Productivity isn’t about squeezing out more hours—it’s about managing your peaks. Pay attention to when your mind is naturally sharpest (for most, mid-morning and mid-afternoon) and schedule your hardest work for those times. Save email and admin work for energy slumps. - Make Your Goals Impossible to Ignore Your brain follows what it sees. Keep your most important goals visible—sticky notes, a screensaver, or a whiteboard. The more you remind yourself what actually matters, the less likely you are to get lost in low-value tasks. -Interrupt Your Own Auto-Pilot Ever found yourself checking your phone without even realizing it? That’s not a lack of willpower—it’s habit. Instead of fighting distractions, catch them in the act. The next time you instinctively grab your phone, pause and ask: Am I bored? Avoiding something? That small moment of awareness can snap you out of autopilot. -Redefine What a ‘Break’ Means Scrolling LinkedIn or watching YouTube isn’t a break—it’s another input for your already overloaded brain. Real breaks involve silence, movement, or rest. Try a quick stretch, a short walk, or simply staring out the window. Let your mind breathe. -Be Fully Present in Conversations We’ve all been there—half-listening in a meeting while checking email, or nodding along in a conversation while mentally elsewhere. The problem? It trains our brain to operate on shallow focus. Instead, practice active listening: put down your device, make eye contact, and fully engage. It not only improves focus—it strengthens relationships. - Visualize the End of Your Day Before It Begins How do you want to feel at the end of today? Accomplished? Calm? Energized? Take a moment in the morning to picture that. When distractions pop up, remind yourself: Is this helping me get there? It’s a simple, yet powerful, way to stay on track. Your Focus is an Asset—Guard It Fiercely We live in an attention economy where distractions are designed to win. But the best thinkers, leaders, and creatives? They don’t just have focus—they protect and build it daily. What’s one focus habit that works for you? #Focus

Gaining control over your Monkey Mind🧘♀️ Do you ever feel like your mind is a constant whirlwind, with thoughts swinging wildly from one idea to the next? It’s exhausting, and it can make focusing on what truly matters seem nearly impossible. I know this feeling well—it’s what I used to call my “monkey mind.” But imagine if you could transform that monkey mind into a “monk mind”—a state of calm, clarity, and focus. Here’s how you can make that shift: Embrace Mindfulness: 🧘♂️ Start practicing mindfulness meditation. It might be tough at first, but it can help you become present and manage the noise in your head. Set Clear Intentions: 🎯 Begin each day by setting clear goals. This will give you direction and help reduce the mental clutter that often overwhelms you. Practice Deep Breathing: 🌬️ Whenever stress builds up, take a few moments for deep, deliberate breaths. This simple practice can help center you and calm your mind. Limit Multitasking: 🚫 Try focusing on one task at a time. Juggling multiple tasks can add to the chaos, while single-tasking enhances your productivity and peace of mind. Create a Routine: 📅 Establish a daily routine to bring structure to your day. Knowing what to expect can help you feel more in control and less anxious. Engage in Reflective Practices: 📖 Try journaling or other reflective practices. They can help you organize your thoughts and turn scattered ideas into clear, actionable plans. Turning your monkey mind into a monk mind won’t happen overnight, but these practices can make a significant difference. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by mental chatter, try these methods and see how they work for you. 💡 Have you experienced a similar journey? How do you manage your mental chatter? DISTRACTION IS THE ENEMY OF SUCCESS. Every day, you’re presented with two choices: focus or float. The world is loud, and the constant pull of notifications, meetings, and endless tasks can blur even the clearest of goals. The truth is… Distraction doesn’t just steal your time, it robs you of progress. I know this all too well. As a single mother of 3 and entrepreneur whose personal brand took off quickly, a lot came at me a warp speed. Board seats, television contracts, book offers, partnerships, and more… With so many opportunities, I often spread my attention too thin, trying to be everything to everyone, instead of focusing on my own priorities. And it took a significant toll on my success, health, and happiness. Luckily I realized this And worked to turn things around before it was too late. I recognized that My vision, the one that sets my soul on fire, demands my full attention. Without it, days turn into months, months turn into years, years to into decades, and you can end up looking back with regret on the life you could have lived. The good news is that your life doesn’t have to be that way. If you laser focus on your goals, you can create the results, and ultimately the life, you desire. Here’s how:  🎯 PRIORITIZE WITH PRECISION Start each day by identifying your top three non-negotiable tasks. These are your needle movers, the actions that align with your greater vision. 🎯TIME BLOCK LIKE A PRO Guard your focus hours like your most valuable asset. Schedule deep work blocks and honor them fiercely. During these times, silence the noise: phone on do not disturb, notifications off, tabs closed, and let your mind zero in on your main priority. 🎯SET IRONCLAD BOUNDARIES If it doesn’t serve your vision, it’s a no. Every “yes” to a distraction is a “no” to your future. Set strong boundaries to protect your time and energy. 🎯VISUALIZE YOUR FINISH LINE DAILY Keep your vision front and center. Whether it’s a vision board, daily journaling, or a daily visualization, remind yourself of why you started and what’s waiting on the other side of your commitment. 🎯MASTER YOUR MINDSET Distraction often creeps in when your mind feels overwhelmed. Practice mindfulness, reset throughout your day, and continuously refocus on your priorities. A calm mind is a focused one. 🎯 SURROUND YOURSELF WITH SUPPORT Be relentless about protecting your energy. Surround yourself with a small inner circle of coaches, colleagues, and loved ones who empower you to reach your next level. My friends, your vision deserves unwavering focus. Strip away the distractions, work daily to build momentum, and watch how quickly clarity turns into unstoppable progress. IT’S TIME TO LOCK IN. ~Wouldn’t you agree? #motivation #personaldevelopment #success

In the early days of my career, I used to take everything personally. Every piece of feedback felt like a personal attack, every critical email would ruin my day, and every challenging conversation left me questioning my worth. I was emotionally reactive, letting words and actions dictate my mood and productivity. This quote (probably incorrectly attributed to Warren Buffett) resonates deeply with me. It sums up my journey of emotional resilience and professional growth. I realized that allowing external opinions to control my emotions was not only exhausting but also counterproductive. I started to understand that my reactions were within my control, and by managing them, I could reclaim my power and focus. Here's what I learned along the way: 🤔 Pause and Reflect: Instead of immediately reacting, I began to take a step back and reflect on the situation. This pause allowed me to respond thoughtfully rather than impulsively. 🤔 Seek Understanding: I made it a habit to seek clarification and understand the intention behind feedback or criticism. Often, I found that what seemed harsh was actually constructive and aimed at my growth. 🤔 Practice Empathy: I started to view interactions from the perspective of others. This shift helped me realize that most criticisms are not personal but rather a reflection of the challenges we all face in achieving our goals. 🤔 Focus on the Bigger Picture: Keeping my long-term goals in mind helped me see beyond immediate discomforts. This broader perspective made it easier to navigate through day-to-day challenges without getting bogged down. 🤔 Developing Resilience: Over time, I trained myself to bounce back quickly from setbacks. Resilience became my ally, allowing me to maintain my energy and enthusiasm despite obstacles. By embracing restraint and emotional control, I've not only improved my professional interactions but also enhanced my overall well-being. Today, I handle feedback with grace, navigate challenges with a calm mind, and approach every situation with a balanced perspective. To anyone who feels controlled by external opinions, remember this quote. True power lies in restraint. Breathe, observe, and let things pass. You'll find that with time, this approach will lead to greater strength and success. 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬: 𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 As a leadership coach, one of the most powerful concepts I share with my clients revolves around effectively managing their focus. It’s essential to differentiate between what we can control, what we can influence, and what should merely concern us. Here's a simple yet profound strategy: focus 70% on your circle of control, 30% on your circle of influence, and 0% on your circle of concern. 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 (𝟕𝟎%) This is where your energy should be primarily invested. These are the aspects of your professional and personal life that you have direct control over, such as your work ethic, your reactions to outcomes, and your daily habits. By concentrating on these areas, you not only enhance your competence but also your confidence. 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 (𝟑𝟎%) These are elements you can affect but not control entirely, such as your relationships with peers or the culture of your team. Spending time here involves mentoring others, improving communication, and building strong networks. This focus helps you extend your impact and fosters a positive environment for mutual growth. 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧 (𝟎%) Often, we waste too much energy on issues outside our control or influence, such as market fluctuations or competitor actions. While it’s important to be aware of these factors, dedicating emotional or mental resources to them does not change their outcome. Eliminate focus from this area to enhance productivity and reduce unnecessary stress. By allocating your focus according to these circles, you maximize your effectiveness and achieve more balanced, sustainable results. You empower yourself to act where you can make a difference and learn to let go of what you cannot change. Effective leadership is not just about hard skills; it's also about how wisely you manage your focus. Channel your energies where they will count the most, and you'll see a great impact on your personal and professional growth. #leadership #mindset #coaching #growth #success #focus

It can be so easy to get caught up worrying about things beyond our control. I’m just as guilty as anyone of paying attention to the wrong things. However, the work I do with my clients has helped me realize that the key to staying grounded and productive is to focus our energy on what we CAN control. If you’re wondering if this is actually possible, I’m here to tell you, it absolutely is. Here are some ideas on controlling the controllable: 1️⃣ Identify your circle of control. Make a list of the things you have direct influence over, like your thoughts, actions, efforts, and responses. These are your areas of focus. 2️⃣ Let go of what’s outside of that circle. There will always be external circumstances, other people's decisions, and unpredictable events that are out of your hands. Acknowledge them, but don't waste time worrying about them. 3️⃣ Prioritize your time and attention. When you find yourself worrying about the uncontrollable, gently redirect your mind back to productive tasks and choices within your control. 4️⃣ Find the lessons in what you can't control. While you may not be able to change certain situations, you can control how you respond and what you learn from them. What's one thing you'll stop worrying about today to channel your efforts more effectively? Comment below! 👇 *** Hi there - I’m Tracy.
