Senior Principal Research Manager

About

I am a Senior Principal Research Manager at Microsoft Research AI for Science, where I co-lead a large interdisciplinary team of deep learning researchers, engineers and quantum chemists working on deep learning for computational chemistry (see for example our recent work on accurate and scalable density functionals with deep learning). My core expertise is in deep learning, where I have made key contributions to generative modeling, including diffusion models and normalizing flows, as well as graph neural networks and variational inference, with applications spanning image and text generation, lossless compression, speech synthesis, protein generation, and computational chemistry. Before joining Microsoft I was a Research Scientist at Google Brain. I received my PhD in theoretical physics in 2016 at the University of Amsterdam, where I subsequently joined the Amsterdam Machine Learning Lab (AMLAB) as a postdoctoral researcher. In 2019 I won the Faculty of Science Lecturer of the Year award at the University of Amsterdam for teaching the core machine learning course in the master of AI.
