A slaughterhouse (also called by the French word abattoir) is a building where farm animals are killed and turned into meat.
The animals most often slaughtered for food are:
- cattle (for beef and veal)
- sheep (for lamb and mutton)
- pigs (for pork)
- fowl (including chicken, and waterfowl such as ducks and geese)
- horses (for horse meat)
