When I close the last firefox window, it still lives in the task manager. I am on windows.

This behavior is annoying, because launching firefox from a shortcut create a new empty window, instead of my saved tabs. I need to reopen this windows from the history menu -> closed windows.

I have multiple profiles. I also tried to delete the sessions folder, but it did not solve it.

Only extension are reddit enhancement suites, tab containers (official extension) and ublock.

I asked on the official mozilla matrix chat, and they recommended to do a full firefox refresh, but I would prefer finding another way.

Is there a setting that prevents this behavior? Is that behavior new?

  • You could try creating a new profile for testing and see if the Firefox process still stays around with a clean profile. Commented Apr 15 at 7:06

What version of Firefox, and for what language, are you using? The Mozilla list for keyboard shortcuts, using English-US language settings, does not list CtrlShiftQ at all. CtrlQ is supposed "Quit", but I find that does nothing on my machines running Firefox 149.0.2, neither on Windows nor on Ubuntu 24.04. Your suggestion to use CtrlShiftQ also does nothing.

  • In the URL bar, type about:config.
  • In the Search bar for the form, enter lastt.
  • Double-click browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab to set it to true.

Now, closing the last tab will also close Firefox.

However, you state in a comment that AltF4, which is listed, does not close Firefox. That key combo is used almost universally in Windows and Linux to end an application. If that fails, then something is seriously wrong.

  • Press Alt, then H and M to restart Firefox in Troubleshooting Mode. If AltF4 now works to quit the app, look to some extension (perhaps malware) as causing the issue.
  • If AltF4 still does not work, check in Task Manager to see whether you're the owner of the Firefox process.
  • Also look in Autoruns to see if some automatically started process keeps Firefox running.
  • Perform a thorough check for malware.

  • this setting is about the last tab, not the last window. also I already have it to true. Commented Apr 14 at 13:03

in file->exit, it shows CTRL SHIFT Q for me, I don't think I modified it Commented Apr 14 at 13:05
  • @jokoon, what happens when you use the standard Alt+F4 to quit? Commented Apr 14 at 13:50
  • ALT+F4 is the same as clicking the close button, it doesn't quit firefox, it is still present in the task manager Commented Apr 14 at 15:34

Ctrl/Shift/Q does indeed work:L I use it every day; it is shown in the File menu as meaning Exit; and it appears in the document you cited, which doesn't appear to be locale-sensitiver; in any case there is nothing in the question about the OP being in the USA. Alt-F4 doesn't exit processes, it closes windows; what the process does after that is up to the process. Answer is basically incorrect. Commented Apr 15 at 2:11
