Monday 28 March 2005: Magnitude 8.5 Earthquake hits Northern Sumatra
At 1609 GMT an earthquake of magnitude hit Sumatra. It was initially assessed at 8.2. This was later re-assessed to 8.5.In Thailand thousands of people in the provinces affected
by the 26 December 2004 tsunami were moving to higher ground. In Sri Lanka a warning was issued that the earthquake
might generate a tsunami, USA's NOAA has recommended all populations within 1,000 kilometres of the epicentre to evacuate coastal areas.

International Coordination Meeting for the development of Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System for the Indian Ocean within a Global Framework
(UNESCO Headquarters, France, 3-8 March 2005)
This event will build on the work of the Kobe meeting (World Conference on Disaster Reduction, Kobe, Japan, 18-22 January 2005), continued at the Phuket meeting (Ministerial Meeting on Regional Cooperation on Tsunami Early Warning Arrangements, 28-29 January 2005), towards the establishment of a Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System for the Indian Ocean within a global tsunami warning and mitigation system framework. IndoTsunami web site established
The IndoTsunami web site has been established, dedicated to the follow-up activities to the Indian Ocean tsunami that devastated several countries in the Indian Ocean region and killed over 250,000 people. The web site will report on the many activities that are being organized at the national, regional and international level to establish tsunami warning and mitigation systems in the Indian Ocean and other ocean basins. Indian Ocean tsunami
On Sunday 26 December 2004: at 0100 GMT, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake occurred
on the seafloor near Aceh in northern Indonesia. This earthquake generated
a huge tsunami wave, hitting the coasts of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar,
India, Sri Lanka, Maldives and even Somalia.
