The nuclear power industry just gave itself an AI upgrade. Working with collaborators including Constellation, EPRI,  the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), and the Nuclear Energy Institute, Atomic Canyon has built and deployed the Nuclear Industry Virtual Assistant (NIVA). NIVA is an important step to giving the nuclear industry the tools it needs to expand its workforce capacity through purpose-built generative AI applications. Over the next few years, license renewals for the existing fleet of nuclear power plants will rise, reactors will get restarted and uprated, and multiple lines of new reactors will get built. We’re not the only ones that see this opportunity. We have tremendous support from investors like Tim Buckley, NVIDIA, and Plug and Play who are giving us the financial tools we need to expand across the entire nuclear fleet. The U.S. nuclear fleet supplies roughly 20% of the country's daily power. It’s one of the foundations of America’s clean, modern energy grid, and it’s now getting an AI operational upgrade. Our portfolio company Atomic Canyon and its industry collaborators at Constellation, Nuclear Energy Institute, Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), and EPRI are officially launching the Nuclear Industry Virtual Assistant (NIVA) for the North American nuclear fleet. Leveraging the FERMI models Atomic Canyon developed on the Frontier supercomputer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and trained on data from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, NIVA is built specifically for how nuclear plants actually operate. Today marks a defining milestone for the most regulated industry in America with the launch of NIVA, the Nuclear Industry Virtual Assistant, across the entire North American nuclear fleet. Developed alongside the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), Nuclear Energy Institute, EPRI, and Constellation, NIVA is the nuclear industry’s first AI tool, built for the industry by the industry. NIVA’s three core operational uses include: 🔎Knowledge Assistant for grounded industry responses 📋Operating Experience (OE) Assistant for contextual analysis of industry OE   🛠️Troubleshooting to guide technical responses (in development). AI has a powerful role to play in shaping the next generation of nuclear power plant operations. Earlier this month, our very own Sarah Claudy Lemonick made the case for AI in nuclear power at the U.S. Women in Nuclear (U.S. WIN) summit in Seattle from the Nuclear Energy Institute. Last week, our team had the chance to spend time together at Idaho National Laboratory. Few places have shaped the future of nuclear energy like INL. For decades, it has been where the industry has tested new ideas and laid the groundwork for the next generation of nuclear technology. Today, it continues to bring together scientists, engineers, startups, and policymakers to tackle some of nuclear's biggest challenges. Glad we got the time to connect as a company, and very grateful we were able to do it at INL. Before organizations can adopt AI, they have to understand their data. That was the focus of Katy’s panel "Your Seat at the Table: How Records Managers Lead the AI Transition in Nuclear" at this year's NIRMA Symposium. It was encouraging to see such a strong turnout and thoughtful discussion around a topic that will shape how the industry adopts AI in the years ahead.
