Money
From a press release:
State Senate Republican Whip and Floor Leader Peter Roskam (R-Wheaton) announced that he has raised over $150,000 in the first 30 days of his campaign to succeed Congressman Henry Hyde. Campaign officials point out that this is significant amount of money considering the strict rules governing federal candidates such as limits on contributions from individuals and prohibiting corporate contributions. This announcement comes on the heels of Roskam winning the key endorsement from DuPage County Republican Chairman Senator Kirk Dillard.
Not bad, but I'd bet most of that was pledged long ago and contingent on Hyde's retirement annoucement.

Given the $2,000 per person cap on donations for a Congressional Primary campaign, your observation regarding the likelihood of advance pledges coming in for Roskam coming thru once Henry Hyde announce his plans to retire seems to make sense. It will be interesting to see how much additional money Roskam can raise on top of the initial round of pledges.

The fact that Carney and Pankau have done nothing except "tease" voters by saying they will run -or- think about running is very lame. Get in the fight and start swinging. I can't stand Roskam, but he's gonna be tough to catch!
One more thing Tom Johnson's wife's family is from the Waste Management Company fortune; he's got gobs of personal money, guess he wants to hold on to it and not spend it ala Pete Fitzgerald,
