14th Annual LMS Data Update

The fall 2026 US LMS market share data referenced in this post is available for purchase. A complete historical data set of all LMS usage data dating back to 2013 is also available.

For nearly a decade and a half, we’ve been tracking and trending shifts in Learning Management System (LMS) usage among US higher education institutions. Our methodology remains consistent, and our goal continues to be to measure institutional LMS adoption by identifying the primary or co-primary systems used to deliver online instruction to many students, not just LMSs used for small subsets of courses or instructors.

Historical trends continue with almost all gains attributable to Instructure’s Canvas and D2L’s Brightspace solutions. It still remains rare for an institution to switch away from Canvas. Brightspace continues to gain more institutions than it loses and maintains steady growth, nearly overtaking Blackboard Learn as the second-most-adopted LMS by number of institutions. Blackboard’s Learn continues a seemingly-unstoppable decline, and Moodle’s decline has begun to accelerate. Since our last update, the most interesting trend has been a growing cohort of institutions migrating away from Moodle to Instructure Canvas.
