The Smart Energy Council was pleased to attend Australia’s inaugural OCA Plugfest and Conference, hosted by the Open Charge Alliance at the Canberra Institute of Technology . The event brought industry leaders together for presentations, panel discussions and networking across four key topics: grid integration, cybersecurity, international and local learnings, and implementation and testing readiness. Accelerating Australia’s EV charging rollout will require stronger regulatory and system alignment, open standards and greater transparency. The Smart Energy Council will continue pushing for the coordinated national approach needed to deliver reliable, interoperable and accessible charging infrastructure across Australia. Thank you to the Open Charge Alliance and Vehicle-Grid Network . #GridIntergration #SmartEnergyCouncil

*Our Energy Transition in the North West panel at Global Citizen NOW: Perth brought together three very different perspectives and one clear message: delivery matters.* Professor Frank Jotzo (ANU), Heidi Leee (Beyond Zero Emissions) and Tim Bray (PoweringWA) shared their perspectives, with the discussion moderated by our CEO David McElrea. Tim Bray from PoweringWA spoke about the shift in how Western Australia is approaching energy: “The state is increasingly thinking about energy as an investment, rather than a cost.” He also acknowledged the reality of implementation: “It’s not fast, it’s not easy, but it’s meaningful progress.” Heidi Lee from Beyond Zero Emissions said the pace of deployment must be a focus: “We are in a race for absolutely everything, because we waited...The energy transition is not going to wait around.” She also pointed to transmission as a critical piece of the North West puzzle, describing transmission lines as the “secret sauce” for unlocking opportunity in the region. Professor Frank Jotzo from the Australian National University turned the discussion to Australia’s industrial competitiveness and export opportunity. “We are as a country really very, very good at putting dirt on ships.” His point was that Australia now has a major opportunity to move further up the value chain - but other countries are competing for the same investment, industries and markets. He also said that "In terms of the electrification of mining equipment, I believe we're on a good trajectory" Moderated by Smart Energy Council CEO David McElrea, the discussion explored what it will take to turn the North West’s renewable energy advantage into new industries, green exports and stronger economic security. Thank you to Tim, Heidi, Frank and everyone who joined us for a lively and thoughtful discussion. #SmartEnergyCouncil #GlobalCitizenNOW #WesternAustralia #EnergySecurity

What's happening in the industry? What's coming next? Where are the opportunities? These were just some of the conversations at Power Circle. For Fortescue's Deidre Willmott AM, one of the biggest takeaways was the optimism and enthusiasm in the room, and the opportunity to hear what others across the sector are seeing, thinking and working on. Discussions ranged from how the industry can be more active in public spaces to emerging innovations and new business opportunities on the horizon. If these are the conversations you want to be part of, we'll see you at Power Circle this November. This February, Freight Forward returns - and one year on, it's time to take stock. In March 2026, Freight Forward brought more than 300 leaders from freight, transport, energy, infrastructure, and government together at Australian Parliament House to work on a practical roadmap for electric freight. There's been progress. But significant barriers remain. What's changed? What’s moving too slowly? What's still holding us back? And what needs to happen next to move from ambition to deployment at scale? On 22–23 February 2027, bringing government and industry back together to tackle these questions, share real-world experience and focus on the decisions needed to accelerate change. Plans are also underway for a Parliamentary Dinner ahead of the National Summit, offering an evening of conversation and connection between leaders across industry and government. “Great connections. A lot of good education. The chance to meet vendors and technology providers.” That’s what Tom Sullivan, Marketing Director at Permaconn, says you’re missing if you skip Power Circle. His biggest takeaway from the day? The market is moving fast, and the industry needs to make some noise about it so we amplify it. A stronger Australian economy starts with smarter energy policy. Australia’s renewable energy future is about more than reducing emissions. It’s about lowering business costs, strengthening energy security, boosting productivity and building a more competitive and resilient economy. And we’re making sure that message is heard where it matters. The Smart Energy Council has made a new submission to the Senate Select Committee on Australia’s Productivity, putting forward 47 recommendations to help shape Australia’s economic future. From unlocking commercial electrification and renewable energy to accelerating electric transport, improving project approvals, strengthening battery and solar recycling, and supporting critical minerals development - our message is clear: Renewable energy, electrification and greater energy independence must be at the heart of Australia’s long-term productivity strategy. This is advocacy in action - representing our members, tackling industry barriers and helping shape the policies needed to deliver a more affordable, secure and sovereign energy future for Australia.
