Some girls have the talent. They just need someone to stay. Supporting girls in Vanuatu through long-term education.

About us

In many parts of Vanuatu, capable girls do everything right at school, and then their education ends too early. Wilkins exists to change that. We support girls through long-term education pathways, from primary school through to vocational or tertiary education. Our commitment goes beyond fees. We stay with girls through the years when opportunity is most at risk. Our work is delivered in close partnership with schools and communities in Vanuatu, grounded in trust, accountability and local leadership. We exist for people who believe education only creates change when support lasts long enough.

International Day of the Girl 💛 Every girl has dreams. Every girl has potential. But not every girl has the same opportunities to make those dreams a reality. At Wilkins, we believe that where a girl is born should never determine how far she can go. Today, we celebrate the girls of Vanuatu and reaffirm our commitment to walking alongside them, not just for a school year, but for the long term. Because when a girl has the opportunity to learn, grow and shape her own future, the possibilities reach far beyond her. They touch families, communities and generations to come. We believe in her potential. And we believe in staying by her side. 💛 #InternationalDayOfTheGirl #Wilkins #GirlsEducation #Vanuatu

Education Is the Beginning, Not the Destination For many years, the conversation about girls' education has understandably focused on getting girls into school. But getting into school is only the beginning. The bigger question is: Where can education take her? At Wilkins, we want girls to have the opportunity not simply to attend school, but to build a pathway towards a meaningful adult life. That may mean tertiary education. It may mean vocational training. And over time, it can mean becoming a teacher, health worker, businesswoman, community leader or skilled professional. Education creates choices. And when a young woman has choices, she has a greater opportunity to contribute her skills, ideas and experience to her family and community. This is why our work doesn't end at the school gate. Education is the beginning. What she is able to do with it is the bigger story.

What Does It Mean to Stay? There is a big difference between helping for a moment and staying for the journey. For Wilkins, long-term support is fundamental to how we work. We don't support a girl for one school term and assume the job is done. We aim to walk alongside her through the critical years of education, and towards vocational or tertiary pathways where possible. That means financial support. But it also means mentoring, connection and knowing there are people who continue to believe in what she can become. Because the path isn't always straightforward. Circumstances change. Challenges arise. There are moments when continuing an education becomes much harder than leaving it. Those are precisely the moments when consistency matters. Real impact takes time.... so does trust. That's why one of the simplest ideas behind our work is also one of the most important..... We stay. The photos below track Jassinda, who has been with us for over 8 years, from school to now qualified and working!

Talent is everywhere. Opportunity isn’t. Across Vanuatu, there are girls with ability, ambition and a genuine desire to learn. They show up. They work hard. They imagine a future for themselves. But ability alone does not guarantee opportunity. For some girls, the pathway through education begins to narrow because of circumstances beyond their control. School becomes unaffordable. Family pressures change. Expectations about what comes next become smaller. Potential can be lost, not because it wasn’t there, but because the support needed to keep going wasn’t. This is at the heart of why the Wilkins Family Foundation exists. We believe where a girl is born should not determine how far she can go. Our role is to recognise potential early and stay alongside girls for the years it takes for that potential to become possibility. And, ultimately, a future of their choosing.

Looking Ahead As we look ahead, our focus remains steady. Supporting girls to remain in school requires consistent attention to the realities students and families face. Through our partnerships in Vanuatu, we continue learning from the schools and organisations doing this work every day. Their insights shape how we think about the role philanthropy can play. Our aim is simple. To support this work in ways that are thoughtful, respectful and focused on long-term impact.

Small Decisions Matter. In development work, attention often goes to large programs and major announcements. Yet many outcomes are shaped by small decisions made along the way...an organisation refining how it identifies students needing support.. a school strengthening communication with families.... a conversation that clarifies how resources can be used more effectively. These adjustments may appear minor, but over time they accumulate. Progress often grows through many small steps taken consistently.

Philanthropy carries responsibility. When organisations support work in another country or community, they become part of a broader system that affects real lives. For the Wilkins Family Foundation, accountability means being transparent about our role and maintaining strong relationships with local partners. It also means remaining open to feedback about how support is working. Meaningful change ultimately belongs to communities themselves. Our responsibility is to contribute thoughtfully and respectfully.

Supporting girls’ education is often described as one of the most effective ways to strengthen communities.. but its benefits appear over time. Completing school can open opportunities for further study, employment and greater independence. It also contributes to stronger families and healthier communities. For organisations like the Wilkins Family Foundation, this reinforces the importance of a long-term commitment. Education is not a short-term intervention. It is a generational investment. Philanthropy can play a valuable role by providing consistent support that helps students remain on that path.

  • Education has the power to change lives, but for many young women around the world, access to opportunity remains one of the greatest challenges they face. At the Wilkins Family Foundation, we believe that talent and potential should never be limited by circumstance. Through scholarships, mentoring and personal development, we support young women in Vanuatu to continue their education and pursue opportunities that might otherwise be beyond reach. Today, we are privileged to support nearly 40 young women as they work towards brighter futures for themselves, their families and their communities. This short film shares a glimpse of their journey and the impact that education, encouragement and opportunity can have when combined. We are grateful to our supporters, partners and volunteers who make this work possible. As we approach the end of the financial year, we invite those who share our belief in the transformative power of education to consider supporting our work. Staying Close to the Work One of the most valuable parts of our work is maintaining close relationships with partners in Vanuatu. Regular conversations help us stay connected to what is happening in schools and communities. These discussions rarely involve large announcements. More often they focus on practical realities. Which students are facing new challenges. Where schools may need additional support. How local conditions are changing. Staying close to these details helps ensure our contributions remain relevant and responsive.
