How can standard essential patents (SEPs) be licensed fairly while supporting innovation? On October 12 and 13, WIPO brought together judges, industry representatives, policymakers and patent experts to exchange perspectives on SEP licensing and dispute resolution across jurisdictions. On the first day, consultation workshops focused on WIPO initiatives in the SEP field and related issues of data and transparency, access to legal information and fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) licensing. The second day's seminar discussions examined how courts across jurisdictions approach SEP disputes, FRAND rate determination and the role of mediation and arbitration in resolving disputes. The exchanges will help guide WIPO's future work towards an SEP ecosystem where innovation is rewarded, technologies can be implemented and disputes can be resolved effectively. How can AI-generated content be reliably identified? How can we verify the authenticity of original works? What metadata will future AI ecosystems need? These questions need more than policy debate – they need practical, technical solutions. On November 11, more than 120 technical experts from over 30 countries will share their first results at WIPO's Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Interchange (AIII) Annual Meeting. Their work covers the categorization of AI-generated content, metadata for future systems, evolving industry workflows, and a shared language for AI and IP. The online event starts the day after the Global Forum on IP and AI. View the program and register here: https://lnkd.in/dRUBJQ5Y #WIPO #WIPOfrontierTech #AI #GenAI

Judges from supreme, appellate, and specialized intellectual property (IP) courts gathered at WIPO this week to exchange insights and experiences on how courts resolve IP disputes. Drawing registrations from nearly 1,000 judges, with more than 160 attending in person, the ninth edition of the WIPO Intellectual Property Judges Forum addressed artificial intelligence – including IP rights in AI-assisted and AI-generated outputs and the use of protected works in AI training – as well as digital technology patents; permissible third-party use of trademarks; platform and intermediary liability; cross-border IP disputes; and the role of apex courts. The Forum offered a neutral space for judges from different legal traditions to compare approaches and test their reasoning, while remaining anchored in their own laws and judicial practices.
