Evaluate adding the question "Are there persons who might be recognisable?"

[edit]

I invest many manual edit in manually adding the template Template:Personality rights at the bottom of the license section. Maybe we could evaluate an added question, like:

"Are there persons who might be recognisable?"

Tip: it is often the case that a photograph features a person who is easily recognisable, perhaps because their face is visible. In this case, please tick this checkbox so that we can add the relevant information box, explaining that the depicted persons have certain additional rights.

Or something similar :) bozz (talk) 15:41, 12 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Seems not quite to the point. What personality rights are involved in a painting of Napoleon Bonaparte? And, for that matter, do we really even want to add {{Personality rights}} to every photo of a living person? That has certainly not been my practice, and I don't think anything in Commons policy or guidelines calls for that. - Jmabel ! talk 18:38, 12 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps it would be better to add an option to add {{Consent}} with one of the five parameters? That would provide information more than just a generic warning, especially since it's something the uploader usually knows. Rose Abrams (talk) 16:00, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

There was a problem during the HTTP request: 429 Too Many Requests

[edit]

Uploading from Flickr, I am getting repeated failed uploads. The Upload Wizard displays the file name and CC BY-SA 4.0, but nothing else. I've uploaded hundreds of photos from the same Flickr account using the same browser (Firefox). I've switched to Chrome and getting the same error. Philstephenrichards (talk) 16:33, 24 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Philstephenrichards Flickr has blocked us (by accident) before, it might be that this is what is going on again? —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 17:20, 24 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. It seemed to sort itself out. And 30 minutes or so ago after successfully uploading one photo hosted on Flickr, I got the same error message as I reported the other day on the next one. I've raised this with Flickr's Support Desk. Philstephenrichards (talk) 15:04, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Can confirm I'm having the same error every so often when I use my 'Flickr2Commons' account. The odd thing is that this only happens to 'fresh' uploads; give or take about half an hour (I've not calculated this, bear with me) after the photo was uploaded, the Flickr2Commons upload seem to work fine. I encountered the same issue today when trying to upload a photo from Flickr by simply copying its link on Wizard. 鹿苑 (talk) 00:24, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Same problem... --Xocolatl (talk) 20:50, 13 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Could the Flickr owners be throttling uploads to Commons?
I use Upload Wizard and received the repeated message for each file:
  • "There was a problem during the HTTP request: 429 Too Many Requests"
Sometime all files in a Flickr Album get this message. while other times the first files of the Album is processed normally and the remainder get this message. Repeated attempts get the same message. This problem has been happening at various times daily for about three weeks.
Is this related to uploads from Flickr only?
There are consecutive hours where this message appears, but then goes away. Recently, this message appears in whole or in part of almost all the upload attempts from Flickr. -- Ooligan (talk) 21:12, 14 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Flickr and YouTube are getting very aggressive in keeping us and our automation from their content. See for instance workarounds like viewing their content in your browser first per Commons talk:Video2commons.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:33, 14 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
No automation here, but I do get this message every now and then when I want to upload one or a few images from Flickr to Commons through the standard upload wizard (ie, not via tools such as Flickr2Commons) Labrang (talk) 12:46, 19 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Labrang: The standard upload wizard tries to use an automatic method to fetch the file from Flickr. Their corporate overlord wants you on their sites viewing their ads to monetize your eyeballs. You may have to download & upload manually or wait to circumvent such restrictions, or vote with your feet.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:15, 19 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

This is the reply I not back from the Flickr support team:
Sorry for the trouble here. My name is Nicole and I'll be glad to assist you. Thanks for the detailed report and for including the screenshot and Wikimedia Commons discussion. I’ve reached out to my team for a closer look, as the 429 “Too Many Requests” response appears to be affecting more than one Wikimedia Commons user. I don’t have a resolution or timeline to share just yet, but I’ll follow up as soon as I have more information from the team. Thanks for your patience in the meantime!
So a rather vague response and no indication of what the ongoing issue is not timeframe to fix it. Philstephenrichards (talk) 17:48, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hey @Philstephenrichards, I think the issue might have been resolved. As i can now uploaded some images from Flickr Abdullah1099 (talk) 14:47, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Not so quick, it's still temperamental, I got 6 uploads in before seeing the "Too Many Requests" message Oxyman (talk) 15:57, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Oxyman Same here. About 10 uploads before the 429 error came back again. Might be worth letting Flickr know especially if you a paid up Pro. Philstephenrichards (talk) 16:04, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Abdullah1099 I had about 10 successful uploads (I do one photo at a time) and whilst they took a bit longer, most were OK. One or two I got a error (red exclamation mark), but pressing the retry button did however resolved it. How after about 10 uploads, I'm back to where we started with the "429 Too Many Requests" error. And repeated attempts do not resolve it.
I'll wait a while and retry it. If not, I'll go back again to Flickr and update them. Philstephenrichards (talk) 15:59, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah @Philstephenrichards, I uploaded around 5 images. So, That's why that error not shown but the upload was taking good amount time to upload. I am truly fed up with this error. I already requested at meta:Community Wishlist for uploading from url option as i found that can be useful and make uploading efficient. Abdullah1099 (talk) 16:29, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
This issue is chronic and ongoing.
  • Can Flickr uploads by Commons Bots effect all Commons Flickr uploaders?
  • If there is a rate limit ( "There was a problem during the HTTP request: 429 Too Many Requests" ),
does Flickr view all upload requests from Wikimedia Commons, from both bots or non-bot Users, as all coming from the same source?
  • Does the combined total requests by Commons bot and non-bot Users to Flickr, trigger this 429 message?
  • Will Flickr transparently share with the Wikimedia Foundation, if there is a rate limit, what are the limit parameters and is the Commons being treated different than other Flickr consumers?
-- Ooligan (talk) 19:21, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Ooligan: I will venture to guess:
  1. Can Flickr uploads by Commons Bots effect all Commons Flickr uploaders? Yes.
  2. If there is a rate limit ( "There was a problem during the HTTP request: 429 Too Many Requests" ), does Flickr view all upload requests from Wikimedia Commons, from both bots or non-bot Users, as all coming from the same source? It probably depends on the IP Address.
  3. Does the combined total requests by Commons bot and non-bot Users to Flickr, trigger this 429 message? It probably depends on the IP Address.
  4. Will Flickr transparently share with the Wikimedia Foundation, if there is a rate limit, what are the limit parameters and is the Commons being treated different than other Flickr consumers? Hopefully.

Multiple IP address rotation may help reduce the “There was a problem during the HTTP request: 429 Too Many Requests“ error? KMB1933 (talk) 01:56, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Jeff G., I am also hopeful that Flickr is giving us same treatment as they give to there other customers. Abdullah1099 (talk) 03:12, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello, I found the solution on GitHub that might be helpful for this. KMB1933 (talk) 05:44, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Edited: I forgot that you also can bulk move the Flickr images to Commons and not bounded to Commons shared rate limits on your computer. KMB1933 (talk) 05:52, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Mentioning all of these people for caution: @Abdullah1099@Brunnaiz@Gikü@Gommeh@Hullian111@Jeff G.@Labrang@Ooligan KMB1933 (talk) 05:56, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
So basically, The API (api.flickr.com) is generously rate-limited (~3600 req/h) per key, but the image CDN (live.staticflickr.com) throttles far more aggressively, and the rate limits is wave-like. You can fetch ~85-160 original images in a fast burst, then every request returns HTTP 429 and it last ~60 minutes after the last 429 in the burst, and also it is per-IP/global and each retry inside the same wave also 429s and can extend the block. However, a lone 429 after a short burst can clear in ~10 min. KMB1933 (talk) 07:04, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hey @Philstephenrichards, Does any update came from Flickr Abdullah1099 (talk) 08:14, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Abdullah1099 I've heard back from Flickr support
"Hi Phillip, Amanda from the Flickr Support team here following up about the issues you were having with the Wikimedia Upload tool. Our engineers have been making some adjustments on the back end of Flickr, and we'd like to check in and see if you are still experiencing this issue? I'll be standing by for your reply. Warmly,
Personally, I've not received not experiencing the issue any longer, but would like to hear if others have. Philstephenrichards (talk) 06:59, 23 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
No issues lately on my end, all seems well for just one or a handful of individual files. Got a queue, as it were, of a CC-BY-SA album to put up, though, so I'll report back in after that some point this weekend. Hullian111 (talk) 09:35, 23 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Nah, checking in with a batch upload today on my Flickr2Commons account, I got up to four consecutively with very slow upload speeds before upload errors started to pop up... although no error type is listed. There are some that seem to want to upload with perseverance, so maybe some patience is needed on my end prior to any permanent fix. Hullian111 (talk) 12:19, 24 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Philstephenrichards, Getting no upload related issues recently except in the file https://www.flickr.com/photos/nasawebbtelescope/55572978759/in/dateposted/ Abdullah1099 (talk) 09:41, 23 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you @Abdullah1099 I have asked Flickr Support to request their engineers to monitor this post and perhaps reply to it. They can learn more about what the issues are as some of the points raised are above my technical knowledge level. As a user I know how to work the tool, its easy enough to know when there's an issue but some of the workarounds etc. may prove useful to Flickr to get to the bottom of this. Its important I think to not get users with little knowledge of how this all works too deeply involved and instead help Flickr to get it properly investigated and fixed. caption & description

[edit]

I can't help it, but to ask about "caption & description" again. The oldest complaint about the redundancy resp similar suggestions was in 2011, as far as I can see, there were never really follow-ups. Sorry, if I'm wrong. (Then, please, link an explanation).

My problem with it is that ACDSee has all three, too, but the caption does not load. This results in the dreadful c+p of the description to the caption for each single file. I just uploaded again over a hundred images. I don't how long I will use the software, but it is a principal question: Either to get rid of the caption (and fill it automatically - if the description is too long, the warning to shorten it, could be still valid, but these are certainly exceptions), or to copy from caption to description as well as from description to caption. MenkinAlRire (talk) 14:07, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

(Aside: did "captions" exist in 2011? I thought they dated from about 2018). - Jmabel ! talk 16:46, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I assume ACDSee is ACDSee (first I've ever heard of it). @MenkinAlRire: could you spell out your process a little more clearly? I don't follow the sequence of actions from camera to Commons here. - Jmabel ! talk 16:46, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I write the description in the IPTC of the program (it's databank and graphics software in one), so it is a standard operation (and I hope they'll migrate into a new linux databank). It has title, caption and description, too, but the captions don't load in the wizard. MenkinAlRire (talk) 16:55, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
If you search for caption on the feedback page, there are several older discussions like this one: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Upload_Wizard_feedback/Archive/2011/05#Add_caption_here
Maybe it was something else back then. MenkinAlRire (talk) 17:00, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
If you go back to analog newspapers and magazines, the words below the pictures and other media were termed "captions" and "descriptions". SDC captions here date from Commons:Structured data page creation 07:39, 22 August 2014 (UTC) in Special:Permalink/132326499.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:29, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Issue with Release rights stage leaves you stuck in Describe with nowhere to go

[edit]
What happens
  • In the Release rights stage I used a t.ly link (in describing how to navigate to the file through a Vietnamese Government website).
  • I successfully proceeded to to the next step, Describe, and filled in all the info.
  • When I clicked Upload I got an error at the top about "...blocked by the spam filter...spam disallow list: t.ly." (I understand, that is fine)
  • At the bottom the error message is "None of the uploads were successful. Retry failed uploads
  • There is no back button to retreat and fix the t.ly link! I am stuck at this stage, having spent a long time filling out all of the information for the upload.
What should happen
  • The t.ly. error should trigger on the Release right page so it can be fixed and/or a back button should be available on the Describe step.

Wiki loves Monuments

[edit]

I tried to upload a photo from a Greek monument. However, I was overwhelmed by the complex content of pages and the complexity of the procedure. While all the information on the Wizard assured me that the upload was successful, I could not view my uploaded photo, so as to make sure it's there, neither was there information that the uploaded photo would be displayed later, if this was the case. The complexity of the pages regarding uploading photos and, in some cases, unclear information leads to confusion and frustration (e.g. the "11-digit" monument number has 13 digits and blends with coordinates and makes it unclear what we must copy/paste). Please make pages simple and keep the jargon at a minimum. Not everyone is familiar the specific Wiki terms! Epicuros (talk) 05:39, 19 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Epicuros: Unfortunately, judging from your contribution list, the upload did not succeed. Ymblanter (talk) 09:00, 19 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
That's exactly the point I am making. Uploading seems so complicated that a simple operation as uploading a photo, which I have done thousands of times on other websites, failed in this site. I am frustrated. could you please let me have the URL of a page where clear directions for uploading are provided? Thanks. Epicuros (talk) 19:13, 19 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Epicuros: Your mention of an "'ll-digit' monument number" suggests that you were (appropriately) trying to use an upload process specific to this contest, which may have been more complicated than the usual upload Wizard. Most likely you can upload your photo with COM:UploadWizard, then fill in whatever templates are specifically required by the WLM/Greece. It looks to me like that would be:
Uploading to Commons is a little harder than uploading to most sites because the site is oriented toward reuse rather than just being a place for people to show off their photos, so we variously encourage or require a lot of information that will be useful to reusers:
  • We are uncommonly scrupulous about copyrights.
  • We support an unusually, maybe uniquely, broad range of free licenses.
  • For public domain images, we require an explicit rationale as to why the image is in the public domain, so a reuser doesn't just have to blindly trust the uploader on this.
  • Etc.
