Center for Climate and Environmental Data
The Center for Climate and Environmental Data (CCED, pronounced “seed”) is a program of the Data Foundation. Our vision is a federated and interoperable data ecosystem where decision-makers have the data needed to drive markets, mitigation, conservation, finance, and compliance—one where public agencies provide foundational data and private actors are motivated to contribute.
Climate and environmental data are foundational infrastructure for the American economy. The lack of trusted, reliable information about land, water, air, and natural resources underpins how we prioritize investments, manage risk, protect public health, and sustain the natural systems that economic activity depends on. The CCED works to make that infrastructure more useful for everyone who depends on it. Our partners span government agencies, private sector data providers, research institutions, and international organizations.
The CCED is one of five Data Foundation program centers. It applies the same nonpartisan, knowledge-broker approach the organization brings to federal data policy across all sectors. The CCED is led by Senior Director Sonia Wang, with support from a growing bench of scientific, technical, and policy experts who bring decades of combined experience in greenhouse gas measurement, modeling, and standards development as well as environmental economics. The team’s broad efforts to improve the quality, accessibility, and usefulness of climate and environmental data are driven by the following initiatives.
The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Coalition brings together technical expertise from academia, private sector, NGOs, and former government officials to strengthen and coordinate the U.S. greenhouse gas measurement, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MMRV) ecosystem.
▶ Global Digital Single Market Data Alliance
The Global Digital Single Market Data Alliance (DSMDA) was launched and incubated at the Data Foundation as a convening platform engaging governments, financial institutions, and regulators to build the climate and natural capital data ecosystems needed for green finance, carbon markets, and statutory reporting compliance. It is now hosted by the Bellona Foundation, which will develop and scale the project.
▶ Methane Plume Technical Working Group
The Methane Plume Technical Working Group supports the rapidly growing field of remote sensing for the detection and quantification of methane emissions.
▶ Open Data Portal for Neighborhood-Level Emissions
In partnership with Crosswalk Labs, we launched an open data portal at open.crosswalk.io that provides free access to neighborhood-level emissions information, empowering local communities to take informed climate action.
▶ Semantic Commons for Climate, Nature & Economy (CNE)
In partnership with the Lincoln Institute for Land Policy and Basque Centre for Climate Change, we’re building on these lessons, addressing both human and technical challenges of climate and nature data siloing by creating a Semantic Commons for CNE data and models.
We drive change by facilitating collaborative thought leadership, convening technical experts and decision-makers across sectors; conducting original research; engaging policymakers; and developing data platforms to improve the accessibility and usefulness of climate and environmental data.

Despite an abundance of data and the powerful analytical capabilities offered by AI, a lack of shared meaning for climate, nature, and economic (CNE) data undermines the timely, transparent, and trusted reuse of CNE data. The absence of a common vocabulary for CNE data, negatively impacts our ability to understand and report on CNE dependencies and impacts, and for decision-makers and society to act on that information. Creating and using that shared meaning for data across scientific disciplines is challenging, but several recent initiatives offer a roadmap to effectively do so.
This webinar will introduce the Semantic Commons for CNE project, which will work closely over the next year with the wildfire and forestry communities to pilot an approach to rigorous, human, and machine-accessible semantics for CNE data — and later to expand to cover other CNE domains. It will describe the need for the Semantic Commons, our planned approach to build it, and how to learn more about the approach and get involved.
