History and landmarks

[edit]

The administrative district features several historical sites:

  • Wiązowna Palace: Located in the administrative seat, this palace was constructed in 1905 for banker Szymon Neuman on the grounds of a former 1787 estate owned by Princess Maria Radziwiłł.[1] In 1809, Prince Józef Poniatowski issued his independence proclamation to Poles in the Austrian partition from this location.[1] During the mid-1930s, the palace served as a filming location for Polish cinematic features, including Trędowata (1936).[1]
  • Church of St. Lawrence (Glinianka): The village of Glinianka within the gmina houses the wood-constructed Church of Saint Lawrence, a protected monument belonging to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Warsaw-Praga that dates back to the 18th century.[2]

Tourism and recreation

[edit]
  • Majaland Warsaw: Located in the village of Góraszka, Majaland Warsaw is a year-round family entertainment and theme park that opened on 1 May 2022. It is the second Majaland development in Poland and features multiple indoor and outdoor attractions such as rollercoasters, and activity zones themed after the animated character Maya the Bee.
  • Góraszka Air Picnic [pl]: Prior to the commercial redevelopment of the Góraszka airfield, the site hosted the International Air Picnic (Międzynarodowy Piknik Lotniczy „Góraszka”) from 1996 to 2010. Organised by the "Polskie Orły" Foundation, it served as a European aviation show featuring historical aircraft restorations and military flight displays.

Geography and environment

[edit]

The gmina contains part of the protected buffer area known as the Masovian Landscape Park. It is naturally bisected by the protected Świder River nature reserve valley (Rezerwat Przyrody Świder), making the local landscape highly popular for regional kayaking, hiking, and cycling eco-tourism.
